  1. Rest in peace. Was always a lurker on eGullet, but used it for many years and found it very helpful.
  2. Interesting. All of four of us at the dinner we had at Aggio had eaten before at Range and felt those meals were substantially better. I did feel like they were still ironing things out, so perhaps things had improved by the time Sietsema reviewed Aggio. One criticism which is a bit broader than opening difficulties would be the identity of the food, it lacked focus. It felt like American Italian versus more traditional Italian cuisine which has become more prevalent in the past decade in the DC area. Need to read Sietsema's article now.
  3. We went a year ago or maybe longer at this point. Enjoyable lunch, charming antique style room. Peanut soup was rich as mentioned by DanCole42 above. Preferred the Hunter's Head Tavern down the road.
  4. We were very impressed with the food. Everything was fresh and inventive in terms of non Asian style seafood. The service was excellent as well. I think places like Rose's Luxury and Eat the Rich have a great attitude in terms of dealing with people. Not stuffy and rather charming, quite the opposite of some high end places in DC. Only negative was the sound level in the back was exceedingly high. Additionally, later on during the course of our meal, a party of four was sited next to us, and they repeatedly yelled across the floor for shooters from the waiter. I felt bad for the waiter, however he handled it gracefully. Quite a testament to the quality of the staff.

  6. District Fishwife is definitely off to a very good start. I would like to know if there is any place better than Black Salt and District Fishwife. Surprisingly, after living in the area for many years, I haven't never been to Jessup, MD. I wonder the quality at the main distributors for the DC metro area would be better.
  7. We use my wife's discover for restaurant months with the greater (1-5%) cash back value and for gasoline purchases as well. Otherwise tend to use American Express and pay it off month to month. The Visa card is a backup for places that don't take AmEx. I had a Gold AmEx but went down to a basic membership since the flight deals usually on national flights within the US were not that competitive. Back in those days, from what I recall, the companion ticket, free was available on Gold cards. I think they main benefit was for international flights. AmEx sends introductory letters for Platinum all the time, but since we're in a non traveling phase still, think Discover is better for cash back as others have noted.
  8. Sometimes you just can't make it work. I think Michael deserves the credit for making the location unique, i.e. Presidential visits. I'm really curious to see how Ben's Chili Bowl does in VA. Personally eating a half-smoke in Arlington seems weak to me, especially since late night visits to U Street after partying was part of the charm of visiting Ben's. The past few years going to Ben's has been more a showing tourists around DC trip. Who knows maybe it will have a large take out business in that location or morph into something like Ben's Next Door which I could see being successful in that location.
  9. http://www.thedistrictfishwife.com We made the trip recently and found the fish to be a very high quality. The fish and chips lunch special additionally was fresh, crispy and not too oily. Made onsite a homestyle tarter sauce and ketchup were particularly a nice touch for the lunchbox special. The quality of the fish is at the same level as Blacksalt, and certainly fishes maybe be better at one or the other on any given day. The main difference between the two will be availability of certain kinds of fish. Prices at TDF are slightly lower than Blacksalt, probably due to the volume of business or as they grow their cliental. What we cooked at home using well worn recipes turned out good.
  10. Looking at the comments so far, I'm curious in the context of DC dining, does any other restaurant have higher prices for seafood in DC at the moment?
  11. We stopped by for a snack and were pleasantly surprised. The chicken momo(s) were very good especially with the two dipping sauces. Samosa also had very crispy texture, proper spices with potatoes and peas and most importantly not over fried. For anyone in the Springfield area, its a pretty good place.
  12. The service for Blue Hill at the Stone Barns and in the Village was pretty good.
  13. I think Rose's Luxury works because it manages expectations. Going to a fixed price five course meal or more 'upscale' offering would change the nature of the restaurant and create a spiral toward a standard DC 'boring power' dinner. Right now it has an alchemy of talent providing a substantially different experience than other restaurants in DC and if it can continue to improve on their own terms it should be fine.
  14. Not at all, I find the news very interesting especially in regards to Colony Collapse Disorder. A lot of science occurs by accumulation of bits and pieces of data that hopefully, develops into advancement and knowledge. In college I worked measuring Organochlorine pesticides and PCBs levels in the Chesapeake Bay tributaries and it was an arduous task to get 50 L water samples. But each distillation resulted in another a data point. The plant to animal virus jump is interesting and appears to be an another found puzzle piece in CCD research. Thanks for the reply!
  15. Thanks for taking the time. It was on a few sites recently and coming across it, I mentally flagged it as a point of interest. My reading was limited to the Scientific American article- http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/artful-amoeba/2014/01/31/suspicious-virus-makes-rare-cross-kingdom-leap-from-plants-to-honeybees/.
  16. Do you have any thoughts on the recent discovery of tobacco ringspot virus jump from plants to honeybees? Thanks for doing the chat!
  17. Driving back from DC at night, I'm simply amazed by the Tysons Corner Skyline from the Rte66 and 267 Toll Road inter-connector. The lights convey a size of a pretty large city in the midwest in scope and not something just 15 miles away from DC. As for dining options, I'm slightly pessimistic about an increase of quality occurring with the development. People don't seem to want high quality food other than Steakhouses or Italian in the area.
  18. This thread has diverted a bit but if we're talking about electronics, and Apple now in particular, please check out their current policies.
  19. South on 8th Street, under the Rte695 bridge is a small metered parking lot. It does get filled quickly but if anyone is going to Rose's early, you may get lucky and find a spot.
