  1. I recall the excitement when Carnegie Deli opened in Tysons and I would take my son there for lunch- as a former NY er it was hard to believe that there had been not a decent deli in DC- Yes it was short lived but darn good while it lasted.
  2. Thank you for the tip! Much better than the $6.99/lb at Aphrodite;)
  3. Just finished another great Lao meal at Bangkok Golden- duck larb was best ever - amazing texture and so many flavors - watercress flash fried with shrimp and mango snd cashews and tamarind- and chicken soup with rice noodles and cilantro garlic and more... A delicious meal.
  4. Chef Seng was interviewed on WAMU metro connection yesterday . While I am happy for her new venture, I fear that I will lose a great neighborhood restaurant. She can't cook in two places at once- unless her son will be joining the family business.
  5. Rehoboth Snuck away to the beach for a couple of days a week ago and had two pretty good meals in Rehoboth- Henlopen City Oyster House had delicious oysters( several varieties to choose from), excellent steamed soft shelled clams which are not easy to find down south here), and I asked for the soft shelled crabs to be sautéed and they were delicious . Second meal was at a new restaurant out on the highway next to the Food Lion- Michys Relaxed Dining- free parking, they take reservations and have really good food- from burgers to pork chops to steak - warm bread and good desserts. Friendly service, owner /chef good informal atmosphere and worth the drive out of congested Rehoboth for a really good meal.
  6. Zora- where did you buy the tritip? It is a favorite of ours but hard to find in DC metro area. Thank you
  7. Went to Pupatella last night after an early movie. Was seated quickly at 9pm- Enzo and Anastasia were not present, but a team of 4 or 5 were manning the prep station and oven. Ordered Brussel sprouts -delicious as usual and Fig and Pig as well as a Buratta pizza- we were happy and felt things were good as ever with leftovers for lunch today- Need to get to 14th street at happy hour- difficult for me but so far Pupatella is highest on my pizza list .
  8. A very disappointing meal at Central last night. Central has been a go to place for us since it opened. We were greeted with "new" menus- the typeface was so large that I thought they brought the large type menu in deference to my age! But no- they have instituted a new menu just last week we were informed and it has a very reduced number of offerings- hence same size paper menus but more space to fill. I fear that Michel Richard's financial issues in Las Vegas and the NY reviews are affecting DC now. There are currently no specials nor the plats du jour- no crab on the menu- it's DC in the summer guys. We were told that paring down the menu and raising the prices was a "business" decision. Lots of main courses listed came with fries or salad- not very imaginative. The disappointing menu led us to order burgers- wish we had known ahead of time, would have gone to Rays. The burgers were not cooked as ordered and were sent back and frankly were not that good. Didn't order apps - the $17 price tag on most of them was a bit much. We won't be returning any time soon, sad to say.
  9. That sounds great! Last summer on Ikaria, gigandes were my favorite on the meze plate and sometimes as a main course- it seems that on the islsnds, tomatoes are a usual ingredient and the beans are finished in the oven. I have also had marinated gigandes - in a vinegary vinaigrette from Wagshalls - and they are good as well. I am looking forward to my first try.
  10. Thank you- on the menu for Sunday dinner along with taramasalata and Greek Salad and warm pita from Mediterranean Bakery.
  11. I am looking to recreate a Greek Island meal without too too much olive oil. I picked up some dried gigandes at Aphrodite market and am looking for a good recipe.
  12. Ah! Sebastian's rum- down to our last 2 bottles- will need to do a real rum run soon. Having spent much time on Virgin Gorda over many years, I can safely say the good scene is pretty dismal. The restaurant at Long Bay on Tortola had been excellent 20 years ago but the curry and roti are still pretty good. I wouldn't call the BVI a food destination, although Biras Creek on Virgin Gorda had a famous kitchen in the late 70's.
  13. Sorry-- I meant 1200 not 200 passengers on the new ships. Also a big fan of "not habving to dress up",especially in warmer climes and with airline weight and size restrictions what they have come to be.
  14. I always try to get a glimpse of Wengen during the Lauberhorn races! Honestly, we have not explored Germany at all. We visited friends while they were living in Adelsried( outside of Augsburg) but always on our way to someplace else. The restaurant sounds worth a journey as do Meissen and Regensburg. The uniqueness of Wengen is that it is perched about 4000 ft above the Lauterbrunnen Valley( sea level) and below the 14000 ft Jungrau so the vistas of mountain and valley are unparalleled - And a big plus is that it is car free as is Murren on the other side of the valley. We stayed at the Regina for my 50th birthday- a long weekend in May during which Delta ran a sale that couldn't be passed up- An old hotel that actually had a good chef at the time for those taking compulsory half board. There are more modern places and other options that are all "Swiss" clean and neat and flower bedecked. The town is the draw- anyplace will do- If you are interested in photos will be happy to send. Here is one pic on a day hike
  15. Joe-Our first trip Wengen was on our honeymoon in 1970- At that time we stayed for $5 a nite in a room in a chalet. Over the years we have returned with and without our kids and have stayed in a variety of accoms- from chalets of varying sizes depending on our group size to hotel rooms. While the value of the dollar has fluctuated over time, the one thing that remains constant is the quality and variety of restaurant food- never very good and always more expensive than it was worth . However, for us, the incredible beauty of the mountains and accessibility of the hikes kept us returning-We rent a small chalet and cook for ourselves- not for everyone on vacation but works for us.
  16. Forgot to answer your question... stellenbosch, the wineries and the geography are stunning- could compare tpmCalifornia but more beautiful and less crowded- paired a with a stay in Capetown and easy driving to the wine country and then a flight to a Sabi Sands game lodge would make an unforgettable journey and can be done with Star Alliance partners.
  17. Joe- same age, similar history of travel and same conversation at home this past weekend.. If you have not been to Istanbul - highly recommend as a great city and add the Istanbul Eats walking tour for a great intro to the markets and off the beaten track restaurants- tack on Cappodocia as well. As far as Cinque Terra goes- pretty heavily touristed from June til august. We stayed in Monterossa and Manarola for a week in total and walked the paths between the towns and ate pesto and sardines and drank limoncello -not life altering but very pleasant.( not complaining) While you can still hike, we return to Wengen often in the summer-in the Bernese Oberland perched above the Lauterbrunnen Valley- the archetypal village with the most spectacular scenery and walks- connected by rail and lifts, it is possible to cobble together countless walks/hikes to fill a summer. We once spent a summer driving around Switzerland to find a more beautiful place and failed. Of course, it is a food desert tho. Spent 3 weeks summer before las and we're not ready to leave. The temples at Angkor are worth a journey in my opinion. I look forward to reading the continuation of this post.
  18. I send Wallace's piece on cruising to friends considering cruising for the first time. That being said, cruises have become a part of our travel plans. We are fortunate to be able to regularly visit far flung places but sometimes just enjoy a week or 2 at sea. We have found Oceania cruise lines to fit the bill- excellent food and service and some interesting itineraries- they have 3 smaller ships- 600 passengers and 2 larger ships with 2000 passengers - the larger ships have 4 specialty restaurants- steak house, Asian , Classic French and Italian and somehow bake some of the best breads ever .We have found the food to be very good and some dishes excellent- but we are oceanophiles ( if that's a word) We took a 30 day cruise from Dubai to Capetown 2 years ago and aside from the out of the way ports, enjoyed dining outside at sea.
  19. Went to BlackSalt for happy hour last night. A first visit but will not be my last! Shared a dozen oysters and each of us ordered the Mediterranean fish stew with saffron which was garlicky and delicious. The fish and seafood were perfectly cooked- priced at $11 - a great bargain! The mojito was yummy- only regret was not enough room for dessert. Not sure what took me so long to go. Slightly off topic but of note- the guy at the fish counter will order 16 oz jar of squid ink if asked or sell it it smaller quantities!
  20. Looking forward to the opening! Helen has catered 2 family events for me and many for my friends, always with wonderful food and service.
  21. Do you think that the closing of Song Que is related to the opening of Four Sister's Grill? My understanding that all are owned and run by the same family.
  22. I love BG and the Lao menu and have had Chef Seng create birthday meals for my friends- a correction about the buffet, tho - Moak is almost always on the dinner buffet as is a larb dish! I am lucky I live so close but a warning is warranted- reservations are needed for weekend dinners - the restaurant has been full for the past 2 months and our drop in behavior needed to change.
