  1. Well, not fresh but they will prepare a new pie on request. The new style pizza at 7-11 is surprisingly edible and it is only one dollar or thereabouts. I definitely would not put it on the worst pizza list - it's not going to inspire any love songs but it's better than you might think.
  2. Really have grown quite fond of Jetties. The main location is a summer favorite, but I hadn't tried the Express (on Macomb) until recently. Glad to find that Express has the same consistently good sandwiches and really terrific friendly service. I just wish they'd expand over to my side of the park... until then worth the H4 trip.
  3. Regretfully unimpressed by Pearl Dive. Place is beautiful but service deeply lacking, overall vibe is careless. An impressive row of gins on the shelf is apparently for decoration only as my bartender had absolutely no idea how to make a martini (painfully warm)... truly confounding! As for the oysters 5 out of 6 were absolutely perfect- very fresh. Dive juice is great. 6th oyster was discolored and lifeless, probably fine to eat but not one I'd serve to a guest. Save the ugly ones for the po' boy. Which I didn't get, because grouchy from bad service gave up after oysters. Definitely a meh of an experience. Pity, I really do like Black's other stuff- especially the fish market...
  4. two dozen take-out biscuits needed for a photo shoot, beauty and uniformity trumps taste. In town DC only. Any suggestions appreciated.
  5. Last week I had the worst take out pizza I've had in DC from Radius, it was really just a miserable bit of slop. They ought to just focus on the stuff they care about - and drop the carryout pizza option, it's just gotten sad. I've been going there for years and years and the only reason I haven't given up until now was getting to 10 magnets. Now I've just hit 10 and not sure I'll even bother redeeming for my free pizza, definitely not paying for take out again from them! Eating in is an entirely different and usually better experience.
  6. Not crazy about the Dupont Burger Joint's grill work. Needs attention. Made me long for my own grill back when I had a yard .. Friendly staff though.
  7. Flying Fish Coffee and Tea is now open (and has been for a few weeks in Mt Pleasant). It's excellent- very friendly, straightforward and good coffee and espresso. Haven't tried the teas just yet. Their iced coffee is terrific. Fantastic addition to the street . Counter Culture beans, they have the usual drip, pour over and mixed drinks. Worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood.
  8. OK, thanks to all of these posts praising Radius, I finally sat down with a friend for dinner. I get pizza every once and a while from Radius and have never been hugely impressed. Clearly I've been ordering incorrectly .... the regular non pizza food that i had was incredibly worthwhile. The current seasonal chilled asparagus soup was absolutely terrific, the mussels were a little over the top (fully loaded) but also excellent. Haunted by that soup actually - need to get back for that for sure.
  9. if you are ever in Greenbelt in the early hours (before 8), stop by the Sunoco near the town center (co-op area). They have classic shop style donuts, no pretense, just regular good ol' donuts . I saw them get delivered once, in the middle of the night, it was a white rattling van with no markings. Oddly thrilling and like Greenbelt - more than a bit weird. I can't find regular no pretense donuts in DC worth eating - maaaybe Hellers. Can't throw a rock where I'm from without hitting an independent donut shop. (That'd be, los angeles)
  10. I haven't been since I moved a few years ago, but I always enjoyed takeout from Mamma Lucia in College Park - don't know how it compares to the owner controlled branch, but worth a try for those in the area.
  11. Starbucks bought Clover in 2008. My understanding is that the machine is no longer available for sale - Starbucks is using the technology for itself. I think the sale pretty much killed the enthusiasm for the Clover machines. Some shops did get rid of theirs (Stumptown, OR) . The Clover process is a fun thing to watch, in the right hands. Not foolproof by any means - It's still the meat behind the machine that matters most.
  12. Chinatown was getting mostly from Intelligentsia, but I have seen beans from Counter Culture as well recently. I like Intelligentsia beans very much, Stumptown's expansion I think means we'll see more of their stuff here - they are all over New York City now. Pound Coffee is expanding to Capitol Hill which is a great - a nice addition to Peregrine which I love but where I can never get a seat outside even in the rain. Overall, I think we are doing very well - not the case a few years ago when it was Murky and ... well not a whole lot else.
  13. I didn't realize you could get espresso in glassware at Monorail, it is one of my seattle favorites but I thought they had no facilities for handling dishes. Will have to look into this. Just back from New York City and had an excellent espresso @ Stumptown in the Ace Hotel. Very different experience from my Portland Stumptown visits, but was perfect. They roast in Brooklyn. Also, La Colombe has an operation in SoHo that always makes me happy. My espresso was perfect, and the aesthetics of the place are ideal - I prefer the layout to the shop in Philadelphia near Rittenhouse Square.
  14. The optimist in me didn't think Granville Moore's on a Friday would be a problem. Ahem. They were packed solid with a 2 hour wait for 2 .. yikes. On to Plan B(elga). Big mussels? Yup, they were perfect - fresh and properly cooked. Good fries - spuds tasted American to me although I didn't ask specifically. In the past I've found Belga to be a bit uneven but the last two visits (this one and the one before) have been dead on. Highly recommended for mussel fans. One of these days I'll make it to et voila but right now it's definitely Belga and Granville Moore's on my top list.
  15. Verdict : definitely ZipCar worthy. Beautiful place, great service and most importantly - mussels were excellent. Very fresh and beautifully cared for .
  16. Mussels are planned for Xmas Eve dinner. Black Salt still tops? worth shelling (ahem) out for the zip car rental for a field trip to Palisades? I rarely cross the park....
  17. I was there on Weds evening, by coincidence a few minutes before Obama drove by on 14th. He didn't stop. I think the place is fine but definitely not destination worthy. I appreciated the friendly staff, the hot dogs were OK but nothing notable - unlike other reviews I've seen the fries were quite good, better than the hot dogs. I love Chicago style hot dogs but given the proximity to Ben's, I'd pick a chili cheese Half Smoke.
  18. We have (or had) an ice store in DC- Metropolitan ice and beverage. Stores selling water are ubiquitous in LA. I do think this place picked the absolute worst location - it might have survived a bit longer up in College Park, but then again College Park couldn't keep South Side subs going.
  19. No luck at P street whole foods. Ella's has it in bottles but I'm hoping for a tap somewhere, Georgetown Paradiso had it previously. it's the great pumpkin charlie brown ...
  20. How about for 2010? any signs of it yet? this is one of my absolute favorites, I fondly remember a fine October afternoon at Ginger Man in NYC with this one ...
  21. So how are the fries really? I 'm seeing mixed reviews. I was surprised to learn in Tom Sietsema's first bite that these aren't hand cut : "Wiedmaier calls his use of a commercial product, from Simplot of Canada, "the hardest decision of my life." [1] I understand the business decision but it's disappointing . And as a former Idaho resident I've got to wonder, are these really Canadian potatoes!?! True, many of the best fries I've had in trips to Belgium were not hand-cut, so a lot of it does come down to preparation. Nevertheless, for such a significant part of the tradition .... 22. I misspelled - it's spuderito, simply defined it's a french fry burrito - from Rick's in Pasadena CA. Fries, cheese, hot sauce. Wonderful thing where the sum is definitely greater than the individual parts.. Perfect street truck food. Someone definitely should try this here.
  23. The price for the hot dog includes french fries so it's not quite as terrible as it seems. What's not clear to me is if it's a hot dog and fries on the side, or hot dogs and fries together. The latter has potential. However, the inclusion of hot dogs at all on the menu seems a curious decision. After all, we aren't exactly hurting for street cart hot dog availability ... Now when is someone going to import the Spudrito to DC? Perfect street truck food.
