  1. Open today (not sure how long they've been up and running though). Grabbed a slice of pepperoni, was pretty much what you would expect from a pizza slice kiosk outside Clyde's. The sauce was too sweet for me; the cheese and pepperoni were unremarkable; the crust exhibited converyor belt qualities. That said, if I was jonesing for a slice of pizza in the area, this would hit the spot. $3.85 for a pepperoni slice including tax ($3.00 for a slice plus $0.50 per topping). The place also sells hot dogs for a couple bucks if you're looking to pregame before going into the Verizon Center. Anal-retentive annoyance: menu typo has a "cent" symbol where there should be a $.
  2. Slices on the Walk isn't showing any signs of life, but I managed to stop by Wiseguy's today (3rd and Mass). A bit out of the way, but the two slices I had were pretty tasty. Reheating in their oven produced a crust that was a little too crispy for folding over, but my cheese slice satisfied my pizza craving,. My pepperoni slice was lacking in flavor; I like my pepperoni to have at least a little punch. Nonetheless, I'd say this is the best pizza by the slice in the neighborhood (Fuel is inconsistent and still disorganized; Pizza Bistro Med is a spongy grease bomb). Cost was just north of $6, which seemed a bit high, but probably about what I should expect for this area. I'd like to go back and try some of their other offerings. They had some Sicilian squares and a margherita pizza that looked inviting. [sorry to go off topic...my search for a separate thread on this place brought me back here...too stupid to realize until I wrote this out]
  3. Saw a sign for "Slices on the Walk" next to Clyde's in Chinatown. Looks to be where the Auntie Anne's used to be. Not clear if this is related to Clyde's at all (they used to have a nice lunch spot Clyde's on the Walk). Would be great to have a decent place to grab a slice of pizza in the neighborhood (Bistro Med and Fuel don't do it for me).
  4. Had the french dip here a few days ago. $20 for a sandwich gets me everytime (granted it comes with fries, but still). Sandwich was good, tender, juicy, but very salty. Fries were oversalted as well. I'd love to see some new stuff on the menu here. I haven't been around that long, but I don't think the menu has changed in a very long time.
  5. Revisited this place a few days ago, and I was really impressed. An order of arancini had a good flavor and quality cheesiness, but seemed a little skimpy (only three to an order). The pizzas I tried were excellent. A porchetta pie special had just the right amount of crust char and the porchetta with gorgonzola on top was delicious. The san marzanos on the standard magherita pizza I tried really made that pizza stand out. I've seen some posts on here indicating the pizza maker here has long ago left, but this place hit all the right notes for me recently. I think I may have disparaged this place in another post about another pizza place a few weeks ago, if so, I take it all back.
  6. I stopped in for an early dinner this Spring, and wasn't really impressed. Asked for a chicken cheesesteak, but they were out. Went with a regular cheesesteak and tried a slice of pizza; could have done better with steakums and a tombstone from Safeway down the street. I might be tempted to give them another shot, but they seem to be closed every time I walk by.
  7. Looked to be closed tonight. Didn't get a good look at the sign in the window, but seemed to be an application to transfer the beer/wine license to something called Maggie's.
  8. Ate at Pizza CS for the first time the other night and I was really impressed. Not sure why anyone travelling south from Rockville and points north would go any further for "Neopolitan" pizzas (i.e. not worth the extra gas money to drive further, imho). I really liked the tomato flavor in the pies I tried, didn't have a chance to try any of the white pies but it looked like they had a bunch of options on the menu. The best part, though, was probably the crust: enough char without being burned, and not a soggy crust. The beer list seems thoughtful and concise. In addition to about 10 bottles, they had a couple drafts (magic hat and peroni if I remember). I had a sausage pizza, and the sausage they use is crumbled a little finer than you typically see on a pizza (not sure if that is the best way to describe it). I think I actually liked it better that way, but might need a couple more tries to know for sure. One non-food thing to note: I walked in expecting a typical restaurant, but you just order and pay at the counter, so fyi.
  9. I'm embarrassed to admit it here, but I remember really enjoying the chicken parm at Maggiano's in Tyson's (sure it is the same everywhere) a few years ago. Another spot where the portion is obscenely large.
  10. This place has been open at least a few months now, anyone have an opinion? Thinking about stopping by this weekend...
  11. Just went and grabbed two slices. Not as good as I remember from previous visits. The texture of the crust was as good as I remember with a nice crispness, but the sauce was entirely too sweet. Maybe I would have been better served with their white pizza, but I have memories of their standard slice being sooo good.
  12. I've always enjoyed Matchbox, but it is what it is: miniburgers and pizza. The matchbox meat has been my go-to and I haven't really been disappointed. I see a lot of complaints that there is a lot of cheese, which I guess is true. But this is pizza in an american-style, big-portion restaurant, a generous helping of cheese is what I expect. I suppose you could ask them for less cheese and they would happily accommodate the request. ETA: I think the California location has been around for a few years...at least I remember seeing they had a restaurant out there when the Chinatown outpost was their only location in the DC area.
  13. I went the other day for lunch and had a ham/cheese baguette. Overall it was very good, a lot better than other options in the neighborhood. The ham was just okay, but the baguette had a nice crunch/chewiness (even if my jaw was a little sore by the end). Also enjoyed a chocolate and almond (? not sure I am remembering this correctly) croissant for desert. Again, much better than anything else I can get in the neighborhood (including the farmer market on Thursdays) but not as good as anything Praline in Bethesda offers. The croissant was still a little warm but I'm not sure if it was still warm from cooking or from some sort of heated storage.
  14. Any update on the bakery that is supposed to occupy the space vacated by Manhattan Deli?
  15. There was (and undoubtedly still is) a Kline's in Harrisonburg, VA when I went to JMU. There might have been two locations in Harrisonburg, and at least one in nearby Staunton, VA. I wonder if this is related...
  16. On Fairmont Avenue, across the street from the space that has been YinYankee and Relic in recent memory. A few doors down from Black Finn.
  17. Saw a sign at Bethesda location that said they are opening Monday March 16.
  18. I've never been a fan of the communal dining thing. I believe le pain quotidien has some sort of communal table in Bethesda (might be a company-wide thing, I don't know). Really, if I ever felt the desire for "communal" dining, many restaurants have a bar where you can eat. Just my $0.02, I'm sure others feel differently, so maybe there is a market for this sort of thing.
  19. Does anyone know if Clyde's still does this? I remember taking advantage about a year ago, but they didn't seem to be offering the promotion over the summer. Speaking of discounted food in the late afternoon, does anyone know if Au Bon Pain in PennQuarter does half priced pastries/cookies at the end of the day?
  20. Is "North Potomac" a euphemism for Gaithersburg? I've never really understood this (same goes for "North Bethesda" and Rockville). Probably off-topic, but the thread title threw me for a loop.
  21. Had a very good meal at the Dupont location a couple weeks ago. Had a crostini appetizer with prosciutto which was very tasty. My roasted tomato pizza special was great as well, much better than other pies I've had here in the past. Major plus for not having a soggy crust like some other places (although I do love 2 Amy's...certainly best pizza sauce in town).
  22. Has anyone heard about "Burger Joint" in Bethesda. Hope they're better than the juice place that used to be there. I think their website is burgerjointdc.com (or something similar).
