  1. Clay, that was an excellent summary of both AF's philosophy and reactions to posts-to-date. I keep thinking about the post in the American Flatbread thread which insisted that the place need to have Coke and Pepsi to satisfy the kids. Certainly a troubling statement on what people accept as being OK for children to put in their mouths. It's incredibly refreshing to see an enterprise like American Flatbread come to our area to help educate and implement a vision such as yours. We are lucky to have you.
  2. Though I find this to be very funny, and appreciate it as a native Rockvillian (so close to being a Rockwellian!), I do have to mention that Urban BBQ is doing some delicious, critically-acclaimed stuff near the corner of Chapman and Twinbrook.
  3. Sad. Very sad. We have now arrived at the lowest common denominator in advertising.
  4. Very close....it is the restaurant we went to the one time we went to Strathmore. Probably 1-2 miles away and about a 5 minute drive. Interestingly, the next closest restaurant to Strathmore is Addie's, another Black's restaurant. I guess there's also the Pooks Hill Marriott but nothing much good there I don't think.
  5. Tom mentioned in his chat today that Urban Burger is superior to Five Guys. My March 3rd posting was right after Tom's review and the place was packed after 5pm. We went a few weeks ago, again on a Saturday, and made a point to get there early (5pm or so) to avoid crowds. No problem at all...even at 6:30, it was easy to find a table. But the burgers were still awesome!
  6. Blake: had almost the same thought as you. My time at Minibar seemed typical of most I've heard on the board and in reviews: cutting edge food was mostly hits, some misses; service was efficient and the guys were always willing to answer questions given the chef to customer ratio.
  7. Perhaps you can elaborate on this rude incident? As Heather pointed out, most of Andres' efforts have been highly lauded by some highly respected folks in the food "industry." I have only been to Jaleo, Zaytinya and Minibar myself and can say that these are fine establishments for what they set out to do. And for those who watch ICA regularly, the defeat given to Flay was a spanking rarely seen by any challenger vs. an Iron Chef. Andres clearly is talented and is well-respected by his peers and food critics.
  8. We were there tonight. It was absolutely mobbed starting at 5:30 and continued until at least 6:30. I grew up across the street from Wood Junior High just down the road and can say that this shopping center has not had a decent neighborhood restaurant in the over 30 years that it has been in existence. So UB will do well if just to have a reliable eating place for the locals. Had the burger with garlic mushrooms, swiss and fried onions. It was excellent all the way around. Cooked to a perfect medium, good roll, large and tasty. It is clear that the Urban guys know how to source great ingredients and run first-rate restaurants between this place and Urban BBQ. IMO, no comparison to Five Guys burgers. UB's are bigger, less greasy and made with higher class ingredients. Well worth the extra cost.
  9. Have also ordered the cheese quesadilla for the kids at multiple area Chipotle's. The kids love 'em but don't expect anything special. Pretty much just melted cheese in a tortilla...does not really taste much different than putting grated jack cheese in a Trader Joe's tortilla at home.
  10. Got takeout last night and must say that Mia's is a legitimate top notch pizza place for Bethesda and the area. We've not been to Comet, but I'd put this pizza a slight notch below Two Amy's and competitive with Pizza Paradiso. We had the portobello, fontina and pine nuts special and also the pepperoni/sausage/mushroom combination. They were really good, espcially the flavors on the special. The crust is a bit "crackery" and not as authentic as Two Amy's but still quite good. And the pizzas are less expensive than Two Amy's, in the $10-$12 range. Also enjoyed the chocolate cupcakes with cheesecake frosting. Great to have another good pizza choice, especially for those in the Bethesda/lower MontCo area.
  11. Wondering if anyone noted this from the chat, but in a question near the end on inexpensive restaurants, Tom was indicating Amici Miei, Joe's Noodle House and Guajillo were in "the guide" when they are not this year. Amici Miei was in last year and Guajillo in 2004 and not sure about Joe's. Just wanted to know if I was missing something. Perhaps these were some of the last minute omissions Tom referred to in the chat?
  12. I've eaten here many times but tonight really was a highlight. Everything we ate was delicious, but especially wanted to mention the proscuitto and white bean crostini, the delicious sausage with "hotties" and "sweeties" pizza special and the incredible pear with caramel swirl ice cream.
  13. Definitely not, for similar reasons as stated by others. Places like dr.com have given the diner another outlet to express their frustrations and criticisms where they might have not been comfortable doing so at the restaurant. Though it's still good to deal with the restaurant directly if the diner is willing......
  14. This is not a place to get anything but the kebabs/rice and lunch combinations. Everything else, including the bread, hummus and it appears the felafel (never had it) are very ordinary.
  15. In Montgomery County, I'd be hard pressed to think of a better place for sushi than Niwano Hana. Though everything is good, the Spicy Scallop roll is their signature roll for me. Though on the expensive side, it's a huge portion (8 pieces), topped with a really tasty creamy sauce with quite a zing. Not for the traditionalists who don't like mayo-based toppings but definitely a must-try for others.
  16. Here's what it comes down to: this is a board where anyone, no matter who they are, where they are from and how much they know about food, can and should be able to express their opinions freely. To chide Chica on her food-related credentials and to nitpick every detail of her post does a great disservice to what dr.com is all about.
  17. I agree with everything you said but you left out one key point: Pappy appeared frustrated at the outcome of the conversation even though it was conducted fairly well on both sides. It appears to me that he felt "ganged up" upon and/or his concern was blown out of proportion. If it was such a good exchange, no one on either side should have felt negativity.
  18. No one has mentioned Rio Grande.....is that it?
  19. You imply at the end that you have eaten at Corduroy before. If you had, you would have known that the prices assumed for dinner were unbelievably low. Also, a contract is two-way, not one-way. This means that the diner has responsibility for noting a lunch vs. a dinner menu.
  20. I have not eaten at Dino yet but after reading deangold's last post, I REALLY want to go. What an honest, classy response to a sticky situation. Well done!
  21. I continue to be disturbed by what I perceive is a pack mentality on the website. I have seen many times in the cases of DR.com sweethearts like Dino, Palena and Ray's that when a member speaks of a negative experience, they are beaten down like a fly with a swatter. Again, it is happening with this thread. DbC had a negative experience. Just because she may be less of a "foodie" or perhaps less sophisticated is irrelevant. She has every right to firmly express her opinion. It is up to the reader to decide the quality/credibility of her comments. Looking at the opposite of johnb's argument, I would argue that 80% of the reviews for this restaurant have been positive. It is much more important to consider a negative review as "contrasting information" than continued positive reviews. I also take some issue with the "interest zone" comment. Though it is certainly true that most people that frequent DR.com are sophisticated when it comes to food, what about the casual diner who is looking for quick information? Isn't it Rocks' goal to see membership to the website rise, which would mean pulling in less sophisticated members? I think someone like DbC should be strong and defend their opinions in light of the attacks that inevitably will come.
  22. So the major gripe with Todd's chat is that he is not matching up recommendations perfectly with the given location? Unreal. In both Tom's and Todd's chats, people usually ask specifically about a certain focused area if they want a recommendation in that area. If not specified, I think Todd has every right to lead the questioner to his recommendation anywhere in the DC area. Even if specified, within a few miles radius seems very reasonable. This criticism seems to really miss the mark, IMO.
  23. Absolutely with gks on this. I think it is safe to say that most who post on this board are experienced eaters and we can trust each other's sense on a good or bad experience. I think gks is experiencing the "pack mentality" that was brought up in some of the discussions ealier this month for "popular" restaurants on this board.
