  1. Seriously, why can't Columbia Heights just go back to the days of bombed out buildings and feral children throwing rocks at passers by?
  2. Nice to have one good day out of four I enjoyed a Chili Frito Pie from the Hard Times stand yesterday, even though it came with a baseball sized 'dallop' of sour cream on top.
  3. Love the map too -- bookmarked for future use. How about Modern Times at Politics & Prose? http://moderntimescoffeehouse.blogspot.com/ Mayorga at King Farm and National Harbor? http://www.mayorgacoffee.com/about/retail-locations/
  4. Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
  5. They had a Living Social expiration date this weekend (I know because I couldn't use mine). I wonder if that put them in the weeds/off their game. That said, I've had pretty inattentive service there before.
  6. Wow - this thread hasn't been touched in ages! John Fulchino and Ann Cashion will be moving Taqueria Nacional to 14th and T NW in a few months... I guess they see a lot of potential around U St for the concept -- and they can add dinner and booze. Interesting that they're going to change the takeout space of the existing taqueria (to a Johnny's takeout). I have noticed that their business has gone from 'packed/line out the door' to just 'steady' since the flotilla of food trucks has become permanent on nearby N. Capitol.
  7. Exactly 18-9? 1930 http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/WSH/1930-schedule-scores.shtml But they were a game better than that in 1932 at 19-8 http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/WSH/1932-schedule-scores.shtml Our last playoff team started off 17-11, that was in 1933 http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/WSH/1933-schedule-scores.shtml
  8. The story has gone a bit haywire... Vanished Craigslist Post Sends Rumors Flying About Future of Capital City Diner
  9. Apparently a new owner has been found and the Royal Mile Pub will be re-opening on March 16th. This info comes from Wheaton Patch... and my father (who saw the "grand re-opening" sign in the window). http://wheatoncalling.blogspot.com/2012/03/back-from-vacation-rm-update.html
  10. Oh my God - I can't decide whether this is the funniest or saddest thing I've ever seen. What the fuck is an executive bar - does he think that Silver Spring is an airport? I've actually watched Bar Rescue before and I thought that Taffer's ideas were always bland, corporate and sort-of 90s (probably when he made his bones and thinks times never change). "Hey, make this blue cocktail with a Grand Marnier float in it and PROFIT!" But to literally name something Corporate is astounding. The sad part is that the space and location isn't terrible (especially the nice outside garden begging for a young crowd). Silver Spring needs a lot, especially a place with simple, attentive service that Jackie's places can't seem to manage. Woe is my hometown - this bar is rescued into something even worse; 600 bajillion spent by the county on The Fillmore and it's a Live Nation hellhole. But I digress...
  11. I live close to both Goldbergs and Bagel City and I prefer the latter. I agree with your assessment on the crust/chew factor. Tasty, good size. Goldbergs are a little too bloated though I do like the taste. Funny enough, I actually find the service to be quick and very friendly at Bagel City when I go on a Saturday or Sunday morning - while I feel like I've gotten a colder shoulder at Goldbergs. But I'm not too fussed, they're just fetching 6 bagels out of bins for me. Oh and the 'Saturday' part of Bagel City is a plus for this gentile.
  12. Once the Neighborhood Restaurant Group brewery and bar opens at The Yards, all of Cervera's places in Southeast will be white noise (and I'm usually more 'pro' his places than 'con').
  13. An update from my father (afternoon of 1/12) -- "Just went by the Pub. It's still closed. And they've taken down the 'closed for plumbing' sign."
  14. And an update (this was confirmed by my family as well). Blogger gets half the story shocker! http://www.wheatonca...ile-update.html "Restructuring phase" - just closed Monday and Tuesday of this week for repairs. I'd be very surprised if the Wheaton institution has served its last dram of single malt.
  15. Full disclosure -- I used to tend bar at the Royal Mile. I heard a while back (maybe two months ago) some scuttlebutt that there would be new ownership. Trying to look on the bright side, maybe there will be a closing and a re-opening? But I'm way out of the loop on things there, so I'm not sure. If it's true, very sad.
  16. I went to Mayorga in Terminal B on a crowded, (too) early morning on Xmas Eve. Latte was enjoyable and the bacon, cheddar and omelet-ish panini did the trick - messy but had some actual flavor, unlike the mall food court competition. But then again, only Au Bon Pain can mess up a breakfast sandwich that contains bacon and cheese. Takes a little while for the one staffer to get the panini freshly pressed and ready, but I would order it again.
  17. Yep. One interesting thing with the re-development and investment in centrally located District neighborhoods is their old names are coming back into light. Growing up around here, I didn't know specific area names like Bloomingdale, Eckington, LeDroit Park, Swampoodle, Carver Langston, etc. Sadly, they were all lumped into the 'places to be avoided' category in the 80s and 90s. Back on topic, I really need to check out Boundary Stone. Sorry, don't live in the neighborhood, but I'll keep quiet about it and come with few guests
