  1. I don't care if they're a local "non-chain" chain, if this was a puff piece from Carmen or if they use adorable puppy parts in the sandwiches* -- if this means I can get an edible cheesesteak south of the Delaware Bridge I'm all for it. I'm a bit dubious because every sandwich I've had from Taylor looked much better on paper than in reality. If the rolls and fillings end up being decent, I will eat there. * OK, that might be taking it a little far
  2. Not the "burger joint" version, but I've had some nice regional brews with my Hell Burger at Ray's the Classics bar - Flying Dog Old Scratch and Heavy Seas Loose Cannon come to mind. Reminds me that I need to get back there. Back to Bobby's, if I'm in the neighborhood and can get a burger + bottle of 60 minute for less than $11, I'd be pretty pleased with that.
  3. Man, I had no idea they still made "Dundee Honey Brown"! Haven't seen that since 1998. Surprised they don't have Red Dog as well.
  4. $9 for an Allagash White is an example of why I went to Mussel Bar once and haven't gone back. Using that particular brew as a sample... you can get a 13oz serving of the same beer at Churchkey (perhaps the finest beer bar in the country) for $6 (oh and they bother to make freshly cut fries too). $7 at Matchbox in Rockville, who also pay the Montgomery County premium on alcohol. Freddy's is my go to beer spot in Bethesda these days - keep that Bruery Rugbrod flowing!
  5. The attraction of Matchbox in Rockville for me? Best beer selection in the area (not hard to accomplish). And the outdoor bar seating (when the heat index is below 105 ). I refuse to wait for tables pretty much anywhere I go, so I'm not up for that at Matchbox. But I can almost always find a seat at one of the bars - and the bartender service has been disappointing on a couple occasions, but excellent more often than not. Sure Mama Lucia offers a nice pie for the money, but you lose the bar amenities.
  6. This is a kind of random request, but something crossed my mind the other day... Are there any good, independently run (or even small chain) coffee houses/shops in Montgomery County? If so, can someone recommend one in Bethesda/Kensington/Silver Spring/Rockville? Kind of amazing that I can't think of one in such a densely populated county. Thanks.
  7. Wait, there's another kind of crab besides Blue?? My question would be, where does the only kind of crab that matters come from - MD, VA, NC, LA... Venezuela, etc?
  8. Here's another preview of the Union Square offerings at Nats Park (with pics, prices, etc) http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/post/shake-shack-at-nats-park/2011/06/14/AG5uFAUH_blog.html And more photos http://www.jdland.com/dc/quickgallery.cfm?qd=110613
  9. Post blog item on the closing and brief mention of Whisk's future plans for the space... http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-gurus/post/again-tavern-in-rockville-closes/2011/05/27/AGlyuwCH_blog.html "Despite Againn Tavern’s closing, Weiss has no plans to abandon the neighborhood. He is working on a concept in the same location, though he is tight-lipped on what that might be. “We do have plans to put a different concept there eventually, but it’s a little bit early to fully allude to it,” he says."
  10. Holy cow - I did not see this coming! A sad loss for the area, as Againn provided quality drinks and food in a very nice setting. I balked at the high prices for Rockville at first, but really appreciated their happy hours (especially the later in the evening versions) and lively, mature bar scene (very much lacking in Mo Co). Guess I should have seen a bit coming last week when I stopped in and they only had two beers on tap + the service and food was a bit ropey. Guessing they just struggled to find a huge audience for the dining room - and Matchbox probably did them in. That place is so big that it draws some many people that they might kill off more than a couple Pike restaurants (just my thoughts and guesses though).
  11. I need to eat this right now... http://www.blue44dc.com/menus.html Blue 44 "Pittsburgh-Style" Cheese Steak $12 Grilled thin-sliced steak with provolone cheese topped with house-cut fries, homemade coleslaw, and sliced tomato served on a soft roll
  12. Sounds good to me, especially "Gioldasis is also negotiating to hire two well-known pastry chefs to prepare the Italian desserts. The restaurant will have table service and an espresso bar, and be open from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. everyday. Carryout will be offered as well." Nice to have a good coffee and pastry option open that early.

  14. I also like Lot W on 7th and M SE. It's $10, never fills up and you have the option of being close to all the bars and restaurants on Barracks Row before/after. To add to the neighborhood eating chatter - I stopped in to the new Bullfeathers before the opener and was pleased with the selection of beers and overall vibe (maybe a little too bright and clean, but I'm not complaining since it's a 100% improvement over the old Bullfeathers). Pretty good bacon cheeseburger and fries as well. Easy enough walk from Capitol South Metro.
  15. I've been to Matchbox Rockville a few times now and it IS exactly what Rockville wants - and a bit of what it needs too. Is it worth waiting 2 hours for while your kids go crazy with hunger and boredom? Absolutely not - but what is? It's hyped up junk food (of wait, we're supposed to call that 'comfort food' now), but the dishes are usually well executed - like a well cooked medium rare mini burger. Pizzas are interesting enough for adults while being kid friendly too. The big plus in my mind is that it provides an all too hard to find hang out for a good beer or glass of wine in Montgomery County. Really like the heating and fire pits on the patio where you can get away from the crowds. Service has been efficient and friendly amongst the chaos of overcrowding too - which can be tough to pull off in a new(ish) place.

  17. I'm a self-confessed Churchkey addict (have eaten at B&B a few times too) and the location and available transit doesn't really stop me from going. Though if it was a little closer to the Red Line I'd probably go a bit more. I don't mind the walk from Dupont, McPherson or U St Metro stations at all - even in the cold. I'm a good shlepper Also, I'd like to agree that the Lemon Poppy Seed Doughnuts are insanely delicious.
  18. Funny, I had a dirty little Wendy's splurge last weekend and found the new fries VERY salty. Don't worry though, I enjoyed all of them. It usually comes down to the person making them and how liberal they are with the shaker. I think they're an improvement from the original ones, but still don't come close to Popeyes or McDonalds fries. And I still find Wendy's quality to be pretty good - no real noticeable lag in the sandwiches (I don't get the chili). For a fast food place, their milkshakes are pretty excellent (yes 'shakes' not 'frosties').
  19. The internets said that it's going to be a Paul ("We're about to open In Washington D.C.") - not substantiated, but that kind of makes sense. Spring opening? And they applied for permits as of about a month ago... http://www.princeofpetworth.com/2010/12/new-fast-food-and-bakery-coming-to-801-penn-ave-nw/ I've been to Paul locations in London before - pretty good stuff, but not cheap.
  20. I'm looking forward to checking this out - finding myself on H St more and more with all the cool stuff going on there. Note: might consider a thread title change, H St NE between 12th and 13th isn't Trinidad (which is north of Florida Ave). Atlas District, H St or even Near Northeast would be more appropriate.
  21. No All Day Breakfast Sandwich in the US? No dice!!! I also lived in England for a few years and enjoyed Pret to an extent. More for a quick cup of coffee and a pastry than for their sandwiches - I could see myself using the US locations for the same things (especially if Starbucks was an alternative). There are better neighborhood sandwich shops in London - and I concur with the thoughts above on bread being MUCH better in the UK than here.
  22. Mussel Bar has added a happy hour... Click daily specials offered 4:30 to 6:30pm, Monday through Friday, which include: * $2.75 Brabo Pils (Mussel Bar’s house pilsner) * $5.50 Delirium Tremens * $2.75 Stella Artois bottles * $10 Tarts (flatbreads) Looks like some decent deals there, no doubt in response to some negative press of late. More chatter about it on their Twitter page.
