  2. As a Public Service Announcement I would like everyone to know that we here at Grapeseed are alive and well. We have started to do Friday Night Wine Tastings at the Bar. And even though everyone is busy and maybe even out of town, I thought those of you still here should know tonight's tasting is super. the wines are from the Spire Collection. Galerie Sauv Blanc, Wind Racer Pinot Noir and Chateau Lassegue St Emilion Grand Cru. These are all delicious special wines. Usually Wind Racer and Lassegue are in the upper twenties for a glass. If you can't make it we do it every Friday. Montgomery County requires us to charge for tasting wine so it costs $3, then we give you the first thing you order at half price. Whatever you want. so it is actually less than free for the tasting itself. (yes, i know you could actually just buy a half price entree for $3, but I hope people would be more fine spirited than that). There you have it , your PSA for the week. Oh, and we do restaurant week. and we are doing the AYCE BBQ again on Saturday Sept. 5th. Bye

  4. Sunday Meeting in Boston led to three quick restaurants: Salty Pig near the Back Bay Station. Doesn't get much simpler than this as far as menu goes. Charcuterie almost house made, 3 Apps, 3 Pastas, 3 mains and then Pizzas. Easy. Meats were well made, pizzas looked good. Craigie, near Central Station in Cambridge, Nice burger, maybe not up to the hype as the bee's knees, but delicious, well accompanied and with the very nice service very good deal. Menu looks delicious but i was having dinner elsewhere that night so it was just the burger. Alden and Harlow, at Harvard Station, Is a sharp looking space and a great little concept with a fantastic, mouth watering menu. The service at the bar was top notch for me, the food that looked so great on the menu was a let down in all three of the dishes I had. tallow cooked Potatoes were not cooked well, Spedini was blown away, and the clams were on a strange confluence of pig tails, julienne vegetables of some sort and a noticeable lack of broth. overall Ireally wanted to like the food but couldn't. Thornton's Restaurant for Breakfast was just as good as Brasserie Jo for half the price
  5. There must be a Godwin's Law corollary around here that all conversations make it around to talking about my hand size. Doesn't bother me, it is just interesting.
  6. Nice to meet you and glad you enjoyed the food. Oh, and Pi Day starts Tonight Happy Pi Day (3 14 15 ) Menu 1st House Made Grilled Pizza Pi 2nd Chicken Pot Pi 3rd Braised Pork Shepherd's Pi 4th Apple Hand Pi $31.41 Friday and Saturday Nights Whoever can get their order placed at exactly 9:26:53 tomorrow will get something amazing, perhaps total omniscience or something similar
  7. Yes, your server was just supposed to be the bartender but, due to a funeral, she was impressed into the whole front section and the bar. Short two people on a Sat night can be a bit problematic. Thanks for bearing with us.
  8. I don't know which Bosch dishwasher you have, but mine washes dishes (and glasses) beautifully every time, is whisper quiet and holds a ton of dishes. can't say anything towards the fridge. I can say the Samsung range that came with my house makes me want to poke out my eyes some days. Total Love/Hate with the induction burner and the microwave was a total piece of shit. I feel better now
  9. you got it. I was the only advocate for a properly themed kids menu. I was the advocate for keeping the New England theme overall, when I started losing votes to keep it that way I moved on. It was sad to see some of the goings on. I still feel lobster rolls, clams, chowders can work. Probably in a space with a smaller footprint and a much lower rent.As it was, the winters were too much of a drag to overcome in the warmer months. I had envisioned a Very Simple place serving those things mostly with a great beer selection. it seems not many people want Just those things in the dead of winter.
  10. I had ended my relationship with Freddy's a while ago. i had stayed on a first as a menu consultant, but my partner and I had different thoughts on the way the business model should run, so we parted ways. You can figure out upthread when prices jacked up, that wasn't my idea... Last week my former partner, the current GM and a bartender from Grapeseed, apparently stuck a deal where Patrick and Laura (Grapeseed employees) would take over Freddy's and make it into some sort of upscale comforty food type place. I wish them luck. I don't need a chef or kitchen people at all here at Grapeseed, we've been cookin up some nice stuff here lately on our own. I do need a manager and a bartender , i guess
  11. After eating here last evening, I think maybe this should remain an obscure Korean Seafood House. Granted, we had three kids and didn't do the whole sashimi thing, but it was really not too good. Although they feature the sashimi, the sushi rice itself was one on the highlights. The actual sushi ranged from not too good to terrible. The Shrimp tempura roll was built upon a shrimp that was probably tempuraed on Saturday at best, and we didn't want to think about how old it might be. The egg was bad, Salmon strangely overly salty and Octopus just a rubberband with a nori ring around it.. Even though the waitress checked back with me twice and I ordered by pointing and confirming, the order was still all screwed up. Hot food wise, the Seafood pancake was pretty good, the off the menu fried rice was devoured by the kids, and the grilled beef was BBQd in the back and quite good. however the Spicy Cod soup was devoid of flavor other than straight spice, the Pork cutlets dry, and the pork belly Very over marinated, to the point of being mushy. Then there is 5 minutes of figuring out the bill with the waitress since they rung up half the check as "9 open food....$50.95". this is apparently the translation for the 7 sushi items we tried to order, received six of (different items, but six of them), plus the fried rice. Of course, 9 open food, makes perfect sense. My wife and I don't have many meals with the whole family together due to my schedule and this one was felt like we had wasted one. We did enjoy the Blue Angels prior, though.
  12. Hello, Jeff from Grapeseed here. We will be having a fundraiser for the Oyster Recovery Partnership, this Saturday Sept 13th. from Noon to 3 Basically it is $30, all you can eat, Oysters, Hush Puppies, Clams Oreganata/Casino/Something else hot and bubbly in a clam shell, Chesapeake Blue Catfish Po Boys, Smoked Bluefish Spread, and Everyone's Favorite...Chesapeake Cow Nose Ray. Basically a lot of foods from the Chesapeake that should be eaten before they mess up the bay's ecosystem even more. We are in partnership with Pacific Prime Wines and Evolution Craft beers, so we will have their products on special ($4 Evo Drafts and $6 Sauv blancs) $1 for each draft will go to ORP. Also we will have a few Silent Auction Items with the profits going to ORP: Evolution Hats and shirts, A Magnum of Forrestt Riesling, And A "Sustainable Chesapeake Happy Hour and Talk" with Dave Simpson of Congressional Seafood (food and Drink Included, Dave gets better as he drinks more) The cost is $30 if you buy it at Tasteusa.com. Call us and tell us you heard about it here and we will sell you a ticket for $25. Ask for Patrick or Me. 301 986 9592 I hope to see you Saturday
  13. I was there last night and will confirm both of Dean's points. the XLB were not so great, certainly passable. The best I have had lately have been from Shanghai Taste, which is only like 3 minutes away since nelson street and martin's lane are one in the same. Service at both restaurants has been poor at best. the woman at Shanghai Taste is a tyrant if you get there within 45 minutes of closing, the women at Bob's just chose to ignore me.
  14. A friend got one from Bread and Chocolate (in Takoma Park, I think). it was pretty nice, a few layers short but pretty well made all around, and the people who had eaten the one from Praline declared it superior to Praline's effort. However, the fact that they for some reason wrote "Salutations, happy Birthday Betty" on it almost made me think I was on the verge of sending a photo to Cakewrecks website.
  15. I am really trying to avoid having to make one. they are a bit of a pain
  16. 8000 members of this site and only two eat opera cake??
  17. I need to get an opera cake for a party on Sunday. Anyone know where, preferably on the Maryland side of the river, I can get a good one. She had the one from Praline at a different party last week, and it wasn't so hot. And Toute de Suite is currently closed thanks
  18. Wel,l if that isn't a great reason to dine in Bethesda, and Grapeseed in particular. Stop in and enjoy our luxurious 6% Sales tax (you can avoid the 9% on alcohol by bringing your own wine, no tax on corkage). if you become a regular or a general high roller we usually don't even charge the corkage anyway.
  19. The Jazz is better than, but the videos not as interesting as, the K-Pop in the other Korean places around. I love the girl with the pink hair, whatever group she is in.
