  1. About 8 years ago we did a complete kitchen remodeling in a previous home in Arlington. We used the Kitchen and Bath Factory in Arlington @ 4624 Lee Highway. http://www.kitchenandbathfactory.com/home.htm http://www.kitchenandbathfactory.com/KITCHENS/products.htm They installed granite countertops for us and we were pleased with the results and the overall price of the job. I have no recollection regarding the breakout pricing for the grantite alone. At a minimum, I think these folks are worth visiting.
  2. Speaking of the Cowboy Cafe, it is now under new management. They are trying to upgrade the facility as well as the kitchen. This is a process I am told will take them through the first few months of next year. I sampled a crab cake apetizer with chipotle aioli and the cajun shrimp with a spicy cajun butter sauce over long grain rice, both of which were pretty tasty. They seem to be trying out new items each week. I wish them luck. I always like to support my corner bar, or in this case, my "in the middle of a long haphazardly developed block" bar.
  3. Wintergreen is in Rockville. Close? As Borat would say, not so much. Here is a link to the status of the Arlington store.
  4. 20. Silverware. You have the right to receive new silverware with each course; busboys should not ask us to keep our icky forks. You have the right to a cocktail fork when ordering oysters and a steak knife when ordering steak or when your lamb shank's undercooked. A pet peeve of mine. Why some otherwise nice restuarants will have a server handle your knife and fork and place it back on the table and expect you to be happy about eating with them is beyond me. And no, it is not much better if I am asked to remove my silverware from the plate and put it back on the table myself. Is it that much time, effort, and/or expense to make sure a diner has new silverware with each course?
  5. Hard shell taco, leftover homemade taco meat, salsa, and cheddar cheese all warmed in the microwave. Downed with some Irish breakfast tea. Hit the spot.
  6. True, although it is closer to downtown than many (most?) parts of DC proper. Besides, what bar in DC will open at 5am for a World Cup soccer match?
  7. Summers. Arlington (website). The food may be a little lacking. But, then again, the comparison is to ESPNzone. Summers wins on price, and grit.
  8. leftover steamed broccoli, reheated in the microwave for 15 seconds. homemade potato salad.
  9. If you ask them at the counter they will sell you packages of frozen Kronos pitas from the back. I believe this is what they use for their wraps. 5 minutes in a 400 degree oven at home and they become pretty good. The King of Pita stuff in the front of the store is fairly tasteless.
  10. Agreed. We've had to toss close to 3/4 of the corn we have received. It was either rotting or bug infested. That said, we have been more than pleased with everything else.
  11. When I was a kid, my parents let me heap spoonfuls of sugar on my already too sugary Frosted Flakes for breakfast. Of course they had the good sense to send me down to the local park soon after, where on the average summer day I would stay and play until dinner. Every kid in my neighborhood held to the same routine. It was not a bad time to be a kid............... I cannot imagine letting my kids eat Frosted Flakes or add spoonfuls of sugar to anything. Nor would I let my 10 year old leave the house alone to spend an entire day at a local park.
  12. I was there this past weekend. The standout for me was the Tian of Maine Lobster w/ mache, fennel, and white peach habanero hot sauce appetizer. It was quite tasty and a tad unusual. I appreciated that the lobster was not overcooked. I found the room (upstairs) to be loud and it was odd that they did not seem to have an entree special - only appetizer and salad specials. If they had an entree special our server did not seem to know it. My tablemates had pizzas which they seemed to enjoy but did not look like anything special to me. I would strongly recommend starting your meal with one (or more) Masonic cocktails. All in all it was a pretty solid meal with good service.
  13. Funny article. Coincidentally, this very subject came up in today's Sietsema chat. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7071801501.html I have never been to a restuarant where I have witnessed an inebriated diner vomit on the table. Apparently, I just do not get out enough.
  14. Well, Clarendon is certainly aspiring to be a clone of Reston Town Center.
  15. I have had some fairly good lunches at Il Porto on Muddy Branch Road. Solid Italian. http://www.ilportogaithersburg.com/ Order one of the daily specials on the board as you come in. The place is pretty affordable; even more so when you use their lunch coupon: http://www.ilportogaithersburg.com/lunch.htm
  16. We actually prefer to buy their spice mix and make our own at home. We favor the Cincinnati. It is great for leftovers. http://owgb2.securesites.com/hardtimes/shop.htm
  17. Wide selection, although I suspect they sit on the shelves too long. Sad as I am to go to a chain, Total Wine in VA has more beer at better prices. [To clarify, I am referring to the take-out beer in the front of the store.] However, I do favor The Bureaucrat sub.
  18. I noticed today that they had a mariachi band in store to herald this development. That must mean it is authentic. I, on the other hand, picked up two saltenas from El-Chaparral Meat Market across the street for $5.79 for the pair. A value that cannot be beat.
  19. I doubt this will have much of an impact. The chicken will still be outstanding. I don't think agents are going to be checking the clientele for documentation. As to cash nature of the business, I am not sure that these business practices will keep customers away, either.
  20. When in Maine, don't forget to pick up some Allen's. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6010800808.html
  21. I'll second the gripe regarding the ABC stores. Thank God for the Chain Bridge and my easy access to McArthur Liquors. Though pricier than some DC stores, it is still a vast savings off of the ABC prices.
