  1. Anxo has a nice outdoor patio and the menu has things that I would enjoy, so I went to check it out for the first time last weekend. Ordering is done through their website. I ordered everything at once, thus lost control over the timing and ordering. First to arrive were smoked salmon croquettes and clam chowder. The croquettes were overly fishy and since I ordered lots of food, I did not feel compelled to try more than a couple of bites. The chowder had lots of tender clam bits which convinced me that it was freshly made and I finished the whole bowl. The artichoke with egg, arugula and serano ham dish is something that I never seen before but it looked visually appealing. Taste wise I don’t know if the components all came together. The last two were whitefish salad and grilled oysters. My whitefish salad looked and tasted a bit plain compared to the website photo (last pic) but the oysters were perfectly cooked a seasoned.
  2. Stopped on the way to NJ. I had pre-ordered a pint of hummus, it now comes with 4 pitas and pickled veggies. I ordered 4 additional pitas. The hummus is as good as I remembered- still the best I’ve ever had. The pitas were thicker than the laffa at Zahav but very pillowy. Wish there’s a Dizengoff in DC.
  3. I haven't been to Corduroy in forever so when the forecast called for an Indian Summer for this weekend, I booked a reservation at "Clos du Roy" (the alley behind Corduroy and Baby Wale). As can be seen in the photo, the tables are widely spaced. They also lit a wood fire in the brazier for some added charm. I'm posting this in the wee hours to remind people that they can still go on Saturday night (forecasted temp is low 60s/high 50s). The complimentary amuse was charred tomato soup. This was delicious, as expected. I also ordered a lumpia (Filipino spring roll). A normal order is for 2, but given the other food that I ordered, my server suggested that I get a half serving (at half the normal price). My pasta course was Crab pasta with dashi and Thai basil. There are big chunks of lovely crab meat which I dutifully ate. I would've preferred a richer sauce - I'm a sucker for sea urchin sauce and crab. I didn't finish the pasta, knowing that my last course was Duck confit cassoulet. I love duck in general, and duck confit in particular. The skin is crisp but the meat is falling off the bone tender. I even ate some legumes.
  4. There's a Wegmans within walking distance of my house now (I still haven't been but I've been checking out it's website). Two things that I have purchased from Safeway is substantially cheaper at Wegmans! Jimmy Dean bacon, egg and cheese biscuits (4 pack) are $5.99 at Wegmans and $7.99 at Safeway (both are within walking distance of my house, but Safeway is closer and doesn't require me to cross Rt. 123). Golden Krust Jamaican meat pies are $3.49 at Wegmans and $4.99 at Safeway. I've missing out!
  5. I made a Beyond Meat burger at home once - it was pretty darn good. But I've never had anything at any of Spike's joints. I would if he opened a proper restaurant.
  6. I have cable with Verizon, D+, Peacock (to watch Premier League), and Netflix. I wonder if I would save any money if I quit Verizon cable and sign up with Fubo TV.
  7. I live in a townhouse. The first floor is the garage and pool table room, the second floor is the main living area including kitchen, the third & fourth floors are bedrooms. My kitchen has an island with a gas cooktop and a downdraft vent. I was wondering if anyone has replaced a downdraft vent with an overhead vent? I think the vents run between the 1st and 2nd floor and between the 3rd & 4th floor. Who the hell should I talk to? A kitchen renovator or someone else?
  8. The only thing I watch is the Mandalorian. I think even the kids are running out of shows to watch on D+.
  9. They have lots of semi-enclosed outdoor tables and gas patio heaters. It was in the low 50s yesterday, with no wind, it felt very comfortable dining outside. We started with Cazón en Adobo, bite sized fried shark aggressively seasoned with a green dipping sauce, Croquetas de Puchero, bechamel croquettes, and Foie a la Plancha, served on raisin-walnut toast. Fortunately there's a bread basket and we ate the foie gras with French baguette as opposed to the raisin-walnut abomination. The shark bites were seasoned with quite a bit of cumin? They were really tender and I enjoyed the potent spicing. For entrees, we sampled Bacalao al Pil-Pil - rehydrated salt cod with EVOO emulsion, loads of garlic, and cayenne. I like salt cod, this version was pretty good but it didn't blow me away. The main flavors were garlic and olive oil as stated - perhaps a bit pedestrian? The other entree was Costillas Asadas - braised short ribs with thyme, served with mashed potatoes. It was delicious according to the kids. The kids then sucked down some flan. This was probably the best meal I've had at SER. Every dish was at least good. They have some larger format dishes that sound interesting that I wouldn't mind checking out: Conejo Asado (Serves 2-3) Whole Roasted Rabbit, Apricot Sauce Cochinillo (Half, Serves 2-3) (Whole, Serves 3-6) Roasted Suckling Pig
  10. Some prices make my eyes pop. $22 for Beef & Broccoli, Mongolian Beef. $23 for Beef Chow Fun. $20 for Chicken Chow Fun. If their cooking is super delicious then I think the premium is justifiable, but I don't think their cooking is.
  11. I was craving rabo de toro, my favorite Spanish dish. I've driven past Taberna and have seen their set-up on the sidewalk. With reservation for outdoor dining available on Opentable and the weather cooperating, we went there Sunday night for dinner. We started with Fried Calamari and Garlic Shrimp. The shrimps were excellent, garlicky but not overcooked. The fried calamari were mostly legs, which I prefer, very nicely seasoned, tender and not super crispy. Round 2 consisted Foie Micuit and Beef Tripe Stew (Callos Madrilenos). The foie was wonderful but I really enjoyed the tripe stew. They did not skimp on the tripe, and the tripe was cooked until soft and having absorbed the flavor of the spices. Lastly I ordered the Rabo de Toro con Croqueta. The server asked if it's for 2, I said no, just for 1. They thought I ordered Rabo de Toro Paella, which comes with a minimum of 2 orders. Nevertheless, they prepared the paella and charged for only 1 portion. At this point, we were getting stuffed, so we took most of the paella home in a paper box. I will note the oxtail was delicious, but it was deboned and reformed into the shape of a disk. The paella was also very good, not at all mushy. The only mediocre dish was a side of bland broccoli. I hadn't been back to Taberna in ages, but this most recent experience will bring me back sooner rather than later.
  12. Did you self quarantine? Kanye apparently didn't but he can just pay the fine. I'm itching to travel, and I'm debating whether to ignore the quarantine requirement.
  13. With forecasted warm weekend, I booked a reservation for outdoor dining at RPM tomorrow. When checking out their menu, the website offered a $25 gift for the purchase of a $100 gift certificate. So why shouldn't I buy one of their $100 gift certificates for myself and get $25 free? They're also charging a 4% Covid surcharge. I don't know if I missed some small print....
  14. Went back last night with last minute reservation. Business was not as brisk as my last visit, probably due to the temperature in the low 50s. I ordered the oysters again, and some deviled eggs to start. I'm noticing that lots of places are doing deviled eggs, why the resurgence? Is it because more people want more protein in their diet? I've had them recently at St. Anselm as well as Texas Jack BBQ. I got the deviled eggs just in case the rest of the food I ordered wasn't enough to sate me (but they turned out pretty good). So for my meat I got the wood grilled salmon, with 3 sides: garlic broccolini, grilled bok choy, and kim chi dirty rice. I asked for my salmon medium and it was dutifully translucent in the middle. It was a smallish piece of salmon (like half of the salmon collar from St. Anselm) that was pretty good - I would've preferred more aggressive seasoning as well as more sear on the surface. The dirty rice had nice flavor although I'm not sure I detected much kim chi. I also ate my greens and then went back and finished my deviled eggs. They're now doing 3 meals a day 7 days a week. No outside heating as of yesterday.
  15. Pho Cyclo has a ton of covered outdoor seating. They have a few tables directly in front of their restaurant and then even more tables in front of Jasmine Garden. Jasmine Garden itself only has 2 tables in front of its restaurant. Elephant Jumps, which is next to Jasmine Garden, has maybe 3 or 4 tables in front of its restaurant. All these tables are covered by the roof of the shopping center.
  16. Watching Champions League in Spanish because I don't want to pay CBS. I don't think I'm missing out much.
  17. I recently had my annual physical at Inova 360. And I asked the examining physician if it's safe to eat indoors. He says it's not safe even when the tables are 6 feet apart. Transmission indoors has occurred at 35 feet. The problem is that multiple parties will have their faces uncovered at the same time. Here's a Wapo article about transmission at an indoor spin class in Canada where they were properly distanced.
  18. I bought FIFA 21 for Xbox. I have never played FIFA or any soccer game before - I suck at this game.
  19. I go through reservation websites all the time, hoping to find a new restaurant with outdoor dining. That's how I found Ruthie's All-day on Opentable. And then I read a piece on the restaurant by Eater. They also have free parking - that clinched the deal. So I ordered Wood Grilled Oysters with yuzu kosho butter. I had no idea what yuzu kosho butter is but what the heck! It turned out to be delicious - I only wish the oysters were bigger. The Wood Grilled Striploin with chimichurri was less magnificent (not a great piece of meat compared to the ribeye I've been buying at Balducci's). But a good selection of sides. I chose broccolini and braised greens just to make sure I got enough fiber. It's priced to be a neighborhood joint so there were families with babies and young children.
  20. I went to Rocco’s when I first moved to McLean in 2003 and I’ve never been back. Maybe I’ll go try their South Philly Hoagie or linguine with clam sauce.
  21. I have never had a $32 pizza. With tax and tip, more like $40 for a pizza. Is it better than a freshly baked pizza from Pupatella/Orso/Crust?
  22. F fresh pizza, how about where to get some good frozen pies? I have to confess, I like the frozen deep dish pizza from Uno's. The instructions said to pour olive oil in the pan before baking, and that make the crust so much better. Unfortunately, Balducci's must've thought that Uno's is too low-brow and they stopped carrying Uno's for at least a year. I have yet to find a suitable replacement but I started doing some online research. One nominee is the Crispy Pan Pizza from Digiorno. Another is the Outsiders Chicago Style. Those two can be found at Target (I'm gonna go by tonight and if the line isn't too long like it was this afternoon, I'll get some). A third option is Motor City Detroit Style Deep Dish which can be found at Walmart. Any thoughts on these or other really good frozen pizzas?
  23. Is Andy’s open only for take-out or can you eat there?
