  1. We walked around for a while. I didn't want to spend too much for lunch. It was a toss-up between Sabor de Cuba and Patrick's Irish Pub. The pub won because it had good air conditioning. BF had a Ruben and I had the prime rib sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised by my sandwich. I was expecting a thin sliced "French dip" sandwich. It was a full 10 oz cut of prime rib on toast. It came with a basket of seasoned fries. Pretty good deal for $9.99. It is an interesting set-up. The pub is connected to the steakhouse next door http://www.annessteakhouse.com/index.htmland actually shares the same menu.
  2. I'm heading up to Frederick tomorrow. Can you recommend a place for lunch in the old town area? I'm looking for a casual inexpensive lunch. I read the postings about Lunch Box. Is that still good? Are there places alongs those lines? Thanks. Deb
  3. Traditionally, baos were steamed because Chinese kitchens didn't have ovens. The baked barbecue pork bun is a relatively new creation from Hong Kong, with its English colonial influence.
  4. That's funny. I worked as a bank teller in college and the local cafeteria ladies would deposit cash with us. Once, I mentioned that I missed the rectangular pizza with the pepperoni bits and the large chocolate chip cookies. The sweet lunch lady actually brought some for me on the next pizza day. It wasn't as good as I remembered but it was a nice trip down memory lane.
  5. I can tell you that it is not done at the Tabard. If you attend a special event, rest assured that the filet mignon was hand cut from a whole tenderloin by me or my assistant. While we use sous vide in the kitchen, it is not for any "frankenmeats."
  6. The sad decline of China-block (not enough left to be town any more) continues. I haven't been to Eat First in a while but am bummed to hear how bad things have gotten.
  7. They moved to Loehmann's Plaza (Randolph Rd & Parklawn Dr) a while back. Has anyone been to the new location? I am curious because I liked the food at the old location but service was poor after they switched to table service and crammed more tables in.
  8. I checked out the sale yesterday. It was seriously 15% off everything except produce. The shelves were fairly well stocked but I'm sure it will clear out as the week goes on. When I walked in, an employee gave me a $10 off $20 coupon to use at the new store.
  9. Looking forward to the new space too. It's in the old Staples space--the same shopping center as Gold's Gym and Tysons Buffet so there will be plenty of parking. No more schlepping bags up the steps. Thanks for the tip on the sale. I'll go check it out today.
  10. Today was the first time that I noticed a red #1 by the chat room button. Does that mean there is a chat going on or is there a message for me? I clicked on it and didn't know what was going on so I left the chat. Didn't mean to seem anti-social.
  11. Facebook update from Tortacos: TWO DOLLAR TACOS. EVERY TUESDAY. STARTING NEXT TUESDAY. FACT! TODOS LOS MARTES, TACOS A $2, CUANTOS QUIERAS!! Cool. Guess what I'm doing on Tuesday?
  12. That's cool, I'll have to check it out. I actually don't remember the Velati's shop downtown. I tried the Vatore's incarnation at a home and garden show and loved it. It would be nice to try the original.
  13. If you are ever up in Rockville, El Patio is pretty good. Family owned business, around for about 10 years. http://www.elpatiointernational.com/
  14. I fixed myself a Hong Kong style macaroni soup with ham. Haven't had that in a really long time. http://www.seriouseats.com/2009/09/macaroni-soup-with-ham-for-breakfast-in-hong-kong-china.html
  15. As usual, I will have to see what work looks like. If I am off or only have a brunch/lunch event, I will be there with +1.
  16. I would have bailed after no greeting and no menu. They can at least make eye contact and acknowledge you in some way.
  17. Aw, shucks Don. You are very kind.It may be too early for BLBaby but CulinAerie at 14th & L http://www.culinaerie.com/ has summer cooking camps. Chef Amanda is fantastic with kids.
  18. I haven't been up that way in a while.... Did Hawthorne's replace Something Sweet?
  19. She cuts things that aren't too hard, like bell peppers, fruit, etc. She is probably ready to graduate to a "real" knife. The question is whether it's safe for her little brother to see her using one. You know your child best. If your son understands how to be careful and use "bear claw" to hold food, a little santoku sounds cool.
  20. Their charcuterie and cheese plates are also great. I used to work down the street from 2Amys and ate lunch there probably once a week. The basilico, cooked open faced, was my favorite pizza on the menu. Too bad I never make it up there any more. Sigh.
  21. This is what my niece uses. She loves to help with cooking. http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Chef-3-Piece-Nylon-Knife/dp/B002Q5YH9C
  22. I'm sure some folks will disagree with me but Amphora Catering can feed a lot of people for a fair price. My sister uses them for office parties every year. They charge a flat rate for delivery and have been very responsive/reliable.
  23. I bought tickets to a show through Living Social. They are a very small place and were totally booked before the voucher expired. They refused to honor it so I guess I will never go there.
  24. I have tried BGR in Bethesda twice after my sister raved about the onion rings at the Springfield location. Both times, the onion rings were really greasy, with a pool of oil on the bottom. My burger was overcooked and the whole thing was greasy/messy like Night Owl said. Does the quality vary that much between locations? Have others compared the locations?
