Bubby's, A "NY Deli" in Bethesda - Closed
MarkS replied to DanielK's topic in Washington DC Restaurants and Dining
What mustard do they have... As much as I love Grey Poupon, it does not help good deli. -
We went last night early(5pm) before Caps game in Rockville. Food was good though my wife thought sliders were a drop undercooked. My two teenage boys inhaled 3 sliders each and a large pizza and siad next time they will each have their own small pizza. Waitress never asked me if I wanted another glass of Malbec. I'll be back and hope the place stays in business.

Buddakan - NYC Friday Nov 12, 2010. 9:15 reservation became 10pm seating. This place was hopping. Bar area was jammed and conversation just wasnt possible. Patrons were dressed up. big time(this is Manhatten) The food hit mostly high notes. Edaname potstickers were great as were Tuna Tartare spring rolls. Mains included Scallops, Short Ribs(these were great), Sea Bass, Chicken(just OK) and a few bottles of good Austrian Wine. Dinner for 4, with 2 bottles of wine, 4 apps, 4 mains was about 325 Note..This is fusion/asia food severed family style. Dishes are served as they become ready. Not sure i'd go back but worth the experience

Counter Intelligence in Silver Spring. They made me a corian table many years ago with one major corian theme and inlays of two other colors. It looks like on piece and the work was stellar. The bases are selected from a catalog so there are many choices.

I would have welcomed the salt. My meal lack any flavor at all. To add insult to injury we called for a pick up order 25 minutes before we got there. They were swamped and we still had to wait another 30 minutes. It was so bad there were out of rice and we convinced them to substitute orzo as I could not wait any longer. The pita bread probably was bought from Harris Teeter and tasted old. The family dinner for 4 did not do well in my house. The food is probably healthy as It wasnt good enough to chow on.

We could all pick a specific type or all taste the same wine. Either way i'm game.

Is there interest in starting a group to learn about wine. I'm open to ideas but we could schedule a time where we all taste and discuss online about what we are drinking. Keep it themed with some education/homework in preparation for the tasting. Say once every few weeks and if there is interest we can meet irregularly at one of the better wine friendly happy hours around town.

I'd like to volunteer on the 16th. -
We seriously need to plan a DR happy hour at Dino. The two times I was there this summer the bar was way empty for one of the finest happy hours around. Maybe I was too happy with the wine and food!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the 4 course RW week menu last night, pared with a Grand Cru that i brought from my cellar. We started out with cocktails while the wine was opened. Really liked the stemware was matched to the wine variety. I had the tuna carpaccio for my 1st while my wife had a shrimp starter. My tuna rocked!!! Celeste has the prk belly for her 2nd course and I had a shrimp disj. He pork belly rocked. We each had the flatiron which was paired with some really good polenta.. Excellent By this time the wine was tasting great as well. Corkage was 25 but it really brings the cost of a meal down if you have either really good wine at home you should open but don't or really good wine you have accumulated over the years. I fall into both categories. The peach cobler for desert was spot on and their coffee(frenh press) was really good. Both my wife and I like great coffee and they had it. Add in the doughnuts they also brought and we were ready to explore. Bryan was in the kitchen and I was told he is involved in each plate that comes out. It shows. Volt is easily one of the best restaurants in the area. Fredrick seemed lively and full of energy, not just a strip mall oasis. Can't wait to go back

Going to Volt Saturday night for RW week. Has anyone done corkage there? I called and they charge 25$ per bottle which is good if they have good stemware as I would bring great wine. Any dishes to avoid? Thanks mark

Pizza - The Best Methods And Techniques to Make it At Home
MarkS replied to alan7147's topic in Shopping and Cooking
I made pizza on the grill last night. Using a gas grill works perfectly. I do cheat and use dough from Trader Joes, but my boys don't complain. The gas grill is fairly uniform and with practice I don't get any really burnt spots. Of course it changes after a few glasses of wine-Different story. And no stone, cook it right on grill. Did you flip the dough. After 3 minutes I take off on pell, flip , put ingrediants on and then cook the raw side on grill.- 289 replies

I just came back from Newport RI yesterday. Cafe Zelda had chicken fried lobster as its signature dish. It was amazing. Not recommended for home cooking, this preparation was the best i have had.

I don't know why Blacksalt does not get a lot of action on this board. Wnt lats night, July 4th and it was spot on. Wine List-Very nice-Had a great Pinot from Willamette Valley..The list does tend to the expensive side but there are quite a few nice bottles around $50 Addies Mussels-Great as always..Broth is divine Celeste had Halibut and I had a curry stew-Both great.. Key Lime Pie-Whomever the pastry chef is at Blacksalt nailed it. Blacksalt isnt cheap but it delivers..

Going up to NYC Sat Aug 1st with wife to Celebrate Anniversary and see Steely Dan at Beacon Theater at 8pm. Staying at 53rd and 7th, looking for recommendations nearby. Esca could be a choice, any opinions. Really think I should stay on west side 40s or above. Thanks Mark

Skip Bonefish..too Loud and Dark.. Consider Bealle St Grill in Traville. http://www.bealestreetgrill.com/ Comfortable with owners on premise that care. Food if OK, we have been there several times and have been happy.

Happy hour..Stopped by last night spontaneously as my son called to say he was working till 8 and my wife was out of town. I was one of 3 patrons in the bar area. Where is everyone else. There was a ton of food on the bar including 3 bowls of olives, pickled green tomatoes, salami, pates and more. Great selection of wines by the glass at 25% off in both small and large pours. Started off with a great reisling then a nice Vernaccia(I think, Dean feel free to correct me). Next time this confluence of my family all being out occurs I will shout out to this board to see if I can get a crowd here, or at least a few others. The bar at Dino is a gem and it certainly deserves a bigger crowd.
