  1. I had the same reaction. Trendy bans on plastic straws are mostly bunk, by Adam Minter, June 17, 2018, on chicagotribune.com. I still support a ban on plastic straws because every little bit does count. But let us not delude ourselves about its impact or divert our attention from reducing the other sources of plastics defiling our oceans.
  2. And then some... A serial ‘dine-and-dasher’ loved lavish meals and leaving women to pay for them, police say. He faces 10 felony charges, by Meagan Flynn, August 29, 2018, on washingtonpost.com.
  3. Donahue's Steak House - 1950. At Donohue’s, a Nightly Steak, a Life Gone By, by Guy Trebay, May 29, 2015, on nytimes.com. Steakhouse to the stars strikes last-minute deal with landlord, by Steve Cuozzo, June 21, 2017, on nypost.com.
  4. The Trattoria Villagio was doing a brisk business last Saturday. We did not stop to eat (we did poke around though), but will definitely give the raw bar a shot next time and maybe a little lunch or dinner. The pizza looked respectable. We were going to stop back for dinner, but got sidetracked by the Paradise Springs Winery.
  5. In this report from 2013 it appears that the restaurants are strong revenue generators for the Galleria landlord. Tysons Galleria enjoying its best year ever as other malls die, by Jonathan O'Connell, September 3, 2013, on washingtonpost.com.

  8. I haven't been over there in a few weeks, but I am pretty sure Kapnos Taverna, Yona, and Pepita Cantina are still open in the Ballston neighborhood in Arlington.
  9. Story updated with new headline: Mike Isabella announces the closing of his high-profile food hall in Tysons Galleria, by Tim Carman, August 24, 2018, on washingtonpost.com.
  10. I found this online: https://backissues.com/publications/Gourmet They appear to have back issues available as far back as the January 1952 issue. The out of stock issues have a "Notify Me When Available" button. I know nothing about these people or this service. Maybe you could buy just one using PayPal to protect your credit card information and check out the quality of the product. They are not cheap.
  11. Pop-Up Magazine is rolling back to the Warner Theater with its Fall Issue on September 25, 2018. If you have never heard of this or seen it before you can read more about it here: "Pop-Up Magazine Productions Brings You Original, True Stories, for Your Nights and Weekends" on popupmagazine.com I have been twice before and each time there were some memorable performances. There are plenty of tickets available at the moment, but if history is any guide the orchestra will mostly fill in (and much of the balcony as well) by the date of the performance. Expect the unexpected and remember, once it's gone, it's gone. The performances are never recorded. See you there. You deserve a night out.
  12. Earlier this year Planet Money had an interesting podcast about vodka and the power of marketing. For those who prefer to read their podcasts, you can find some of the transcript at Is There Really A Difference Between Expensive Vodka And Cheap Vodka? by Dan Pashman on npr.org. 27 C.F.R. § 5.22(a)(1) provides:

  15. The last hold out on that side of the Eatery, Kapnos Market, was closed and roped off today a little past noon. They were open and serving take out last week. That whole side also appeared closed to seating with hopeful signs directing people to Graffiato (which itself was sparsely populated at the noon hour).
  16. In Mexican cuisine, it’s a delicacy. But in my childhood memory, it’s a monster. By Jim Webster, August 20, 2018, on washingtonpost.com.
  17. "3 Knockout Art Shows to See in Los Angeles Right Now," by Holland Cotter, August 16, 2018, on nytimes.com.
  18. I have eaten at a Nordstrom's from time to time. My mother introduced me to this, so I like to continue the practice when I can. The food is not bad, even though it is over priced.
