  1. Jeanette Jeannette is located outside of Pittsburgh, maybe half hour or so. It's a small Italian community that was settled a long time ago, there are many restaurants but I've only been to a place called perschettis to grab some meatballs( great) and mauro's. mauro's is awesome! He's a funny dude who in the hour I was there had 3 cocktails while cooking. Peronis were 2 bucks on tap and the food is just fine. Sausage stuffed anaheims with marinara and mozzarella were house made sausage and top mozzarella. Then I had chicken puttanesca which was ok. There's also a dellalos along route 30 which is more or less like a whole foods with fine cheese and meats, desserts and what not. Def worth a stop, I went there in winter And a guy was roasting chestnuts out front for 5 bucks a bag.
  2. Shrimp that have never been frozen before have a completely different texture then previously frozen shrimp, someone who has only ever eaten frozen shrimp may see this as off putting, they can be slightly pudding like sometimes.
  3. This place is fantastic, I had the open face hot turkey( my go to at any country/ diner type spot) years ago. Def good.
  4. You can smell the chicken and charcoal a block away at the spot I hit in bmore, that's my standard when it comes to pollo la brasa, if I can't smell whats goin on by the time I park the car and get out I'm getting back in.
  5. My girlfriend lived on 12 and v before we bought our house, I can tell you from two years of trying to find parking in that area that it sucks. If you go early like 530 the spots haven't been taken yet but after 6 it's a crap shoot. In front of the church on 12th and v stays empty for a little while, and there are a few spots on v like the one that's on the south side that's a solo spot tends to not get snatched up soo fast. But really the later it gets the more impossible it becomes.
  6. The summit diner right there is an awesome example of the classic diner, I had a fantastic smothered chicken sandwich last time I was visiting my dads farm. Also right across the street is the pine grill which is considered a fancy place(I worked there throughout culinary school on weekends). A little ways up the road on same side as pine grill is brewsters which has awesome ice cream, any further or the other way it's gets a little grim. There's a hoss's steak house that has decent steaks and a "salad bar" which has soups and desserts and any matter of things. Also I think Wednesdays or Saturday there is a farmers market at Georgian mansion. And somerset lake is right there. On another note if your going through the Cumberland narrows(it's naves cross road off 68 west) there is a grocery store called the fruit bowl which if you need a sugar fix half the store is pay by the lb candy. And it's the good shit.
  7. Catawba (near Roanoke) Right on the outskirts of Roanoke in a town called Catawba there's a restaurant called home place. It's on top of a mountain and they are open from 4-8. They serve the same thing all the time, so for 14 dollars you get your choice of 2 meats and for 15 you get all three. This comes with fried chicken country ham and roast beef, sides include biscuits, mash potato and gravy, Mac n cheese cole slaw, braised green beans pinto beans. You also get your choice of soft drink all included. They will refill any dish you'd like throughout your meal and you can take your leftovers, everything is awesome with the green beans probably being my favorite. I will be going back on wedsday when I come back up from Alabama.
  8. You can make easy guanciale at home with pork cheeks, make a rub with 2 parts salt 1 part sugar, some chopped garlic chili flakes fresh thyme, rub it on good let it sit in your fridge for a week or so. At that point you can slice it thin and fry like bacon or wrap in cheese cloth and hang it in a cool spot( wine fridge if your fortunate enough) for 2 weeks.
  9. I have trouble not ordering the same thing every time here. Clams with white wine appetizer and veal parm with pasta side entree. And zabaglione for dessert. It's probably what I'll ask for if I'm ever on death row.
  10. Couldn't find a thread so here goes, peters inn is located on the corner of eastern and Ann street, they have a weekly changing menu and are closed Sunday and Monday, bummer for chefs. This week on the menu stands out whats sold as onion soup with short rib and gruyere toast, what you got on the other hand was a massive perfectly(seriously money)braised short rib sitting on a pile of caramelized onions with two gruyere crostini and a strained out onion soup in a little jug next to it. Coulda been and entree and was 15.50. I freaking love Baltimore, it was just an honest plate of food, oh and the house salad with garlic bread is always fantastic. The desserts don't always shine, I had a broken pot de Creme once. But over the years place has stayed consistent and delicious. Seriously, professional grade braised short rib to be had. At a steal.
  11. Ha I just found this looking for a different thread, this is my childhood, we used to throw down on these from festivals and all throughout arbutus where I grew up, .25!!
  12. My best memory of my meal there food wise has to be the realization that pizza can be rendered just as good if not better minus the cheese, we had the marinara with oregano onion and wills home made sausage, game changer. And the level of intensity put into something which comes out the other end looking simple and effortless is outstanding.
  13. I think they actually call it a chub. For whatever that's worth, or maybe that's at Isabella's in little Italy.
  14. I'd like to second this recommendation, dipasqaules is fantastic. Once a week if my dads home from the farm he goes and gets a tray of meatballs and some spaghetti for the family. Best.meatballs.ever. Seriously, they taste like they're all veal, and like the sauce had some marrow bones thrown in when it was simmering away. Aside from that its like a baltinore litteris, cluttered with all types of things. They also have a little eat in area, I ordered I think it was a old world or something and had to take some of the meat off cuz it was way too much, my friend however did bust my balls for that. Anyway this place deserves a reply from the op and a visit.
  15. Coincidentally since you mentioned Sears, the only way two guys can share frozen yogurt just happens to be off the back of a wrench.
  16. Torterilla Sinaloa has an awesome posole, comes with about a dozen of home made tortillas.
  17. Alright, got something delicious for y'all. I was running around all day doing errands and whatever and ended up hungry as hell in the Catonsville area, I've seen this brown and beige halal food truck parked in the same spot for years( in the Walmart parking lot up near route 40 and rolling.) but never stopped in. Decided what the heck, pulled up and hopped out into the rain and ordered up a lamb kabob which came with salad and that rice with the raisins an carrots which I have no idea what it's called. Nine bucks and I was told the best news ever from a food truck with no line, "be about 10-12 min" . So I get my styrofoam box and chow down, the rice is perfect, salad is crisp and the lamb is amazing, tender and charred and juicy, like 6 big chunks. It came with two cups of sauce, one raita and one I thought was a chutney of sorts, wrong guess. It was spicy as all hell, but made it that much better. You gotta check these dudes out, they have beef kabob chicken, butter chicken, gyros, and for the hell of it cheese steaks burger subs and ice cream treats. Although I didn't get one it was nice to see the good humor toasted almond.
  18. I know this is off topic but as a chef I can attest to the fact that we do generally eat crappy food. I have a love I cannot explain for Taco Bell crunchy tacos with hot sauce. After 12 hours of cranking out well prepared dishes all I really want is something fast and easy. Popeyes fried chicken, a taco or what have you, I'm all about it. I can't even be bothered to heat up food already prepared in my fridge. It just comes with the job I guess.
