  1. My first introduction to pho was here and of course I thought it was fantastic. Then as I branched out and learned about other, better places I stopped going. It just was not my favorite anymore. The broth tasted weaker and fake, and the menu was weird having Vietnamese Chinese and I forget what other style of cuisine. However I recently returned and am very happy I did so. Now it seems the menu is purely Vietnamese, and vast. Of course plenty of pho options with I'm pretty sure veggie broth for veggie pho and chicken for chicken. They also have the broken rice dishes and vermicelli dishes like bun bo xao, but it's the bun bo hue that I've been back twice for. There's a duck soup as well. The bun Bo hue is a fantastically large portion with big chewy noodles and not the most authentic I guess but it has brisket, pork pate( like the ban mi) and a seafood meatball. Fiery red broth and cabbage and shisho to round it out. It comes in one size(big ass) and I think is around 9 bucks. Maybe it's under new ownership or chef? Dunno since it's been years.
  2. You know what I meant to say Bedford Springs. It's the big hotel and spa where all the presidential memoirs are. And where the affluent peeps came to stay and etched the glass with their diamond rings. They have a pretty fancy restaurant and a casual lounge. I was in the lounge last year sometime.
  3. The best Shepards pie I've ever had was at Berkeley springs in West Virginia. Braised lamb shoulder, shiitake mushroom gravy and tasty whipped potatoes. I believe there may have been some gruyere involved. We ate in the downstairs lounge. It's also very nice out that way.
  4. That used to be my every Friday morning after late night Maria d's on light street in fells point. Why oh why after years of this do we not learn. And orso is awesome! I gotta get back and say hi to will
  5. Pete's is a pretty good option for pizza in my opinion, I think the crust has a nice texture and the sauce isn't too sweet(although I'm not above crushing a ledo pizza). Only issue I've ever had is when I ordered a slice after work starving and asked if they could please not make it destroy my mouth hot, got it walked out and took a bite and felt the roof of my mouth start to melt. Other then that I had a slice of a chicken and garlic one that was too garlicky and too salty. But still pretty good.
  6. Could it also be due to the fact that the chicken strips don't have the skin? And therefore do not need to be double fried and all to render the fat. I ordered 10 drumsticks and they only gave me 5 so replaced with some strips, which while they were good I missed the crispy skin. Also we tried the okonomiyaki, I have none other to compare it to but I thought it was great, smoky with the bonito and great crunch
  7. I think my friend Said put it best when he referred to beefeater gin as dirty uncle gin. I used to pilfer the stuff from my parents as a kid
  8. The cotechino pizza I had changed me. I'll never make/seek out/eat normal Italian sausage again after that. Not really fair when a dish can have that effect
  9. I'm here! If anyone knows me well they know I suck at computers, so it's taken me a while to take the time to get my email set up. And then I gotta get pictures taken and make up a bio to make me sound cooler and smarter then I actually am. I'm about 90% finished with the menu(at least for a few weeks) and running specials whenever I can. Tomorrow infact we have crepes stuffed with beef cheek ragu and black and blue cheese with a super rich Demi, roasted pheasant with sherry sauce, and a pork porterhouse classicly done with sweet potato purée, pecans and a bourbon sauce. I'm really trying to get back what I lost sight of at pilar(vision, drive, all that). All our meats and fish are brined. All the veggies from area farms. All sausages made in house. Bacon, brioche at brunch. And best of all I have a really great team. My two sous chefs work incredibly hard and have amazing attitudes. And I can finally use oysters on the half shell! Which I love as much as any chef. Anyway yes I'm here, Tuesday-Saturday night. If you look closely at the menu you'll see a shit ton of pork which should have been a hint
  10. Is fried pork taken? (For my name) Also I don't know if everyone is aware of this or not, there is a sandwich that exists called the Baltimore club. You can find it in good neighborhoods tho it's more prevalent is lesser safe ones. Same build out as a traditional club but instead of all the meat cheese and bacon it's a crab cake with lettuce and tomato on one and shrimp salad with lettuce and tomato on other. Maybe some old bay mayo or something, but that's just superfluous.
  11. We call em slammiches. When they're slammin. Ps don can you update my name?
  12. It seems they moved to the bp parking lot a bit farther down 40 towards 695, had the gryo last Monday and it was delicious, and came with a drink for 6 bucks. I believe they're doing just fine after that whole wal mart thing since they were out of the lamb and chicken kabob by the time I got there at 1230. Good for them.
  13. I just made and ate Johnny's waterfall salad for dinner( in lucky peach #6). I used bevs pork chops however instead of dried jellyfish. We used less then half of the Thai chili called for in recipe and still is very very spicy, soo good tho. My mouf is on fyaaaaaa!!!!!
  14. Yea broth was solid, and very generous on the noodles and meats. I didn't feel like it had any base or msg added to it so that's a definite plus
  15. Could be they are using young goat, in which case it isn't really gamey or strong flavored. For example the goats you get from a farm such as path valley or Eco-friendly are young and very mild tasting, where as some goat you would pick up frozen at the H-mart is gonna be very strong because its from an older animal.
  16. Just a heads up to anyone interested, next Saturday the 17th is my last official night at pilar and Sunday the 18th were closing the upstairs dining room to throw a party. I'll be roasting 3 suckling pigs and a prime rib among other things and tickets are 50 inclusive of drinks and grub. I believe they're available through city eats. There's gonna be plenty of food and a dj as well.
  17. All this jj talk today made me detour from 495 on my way home to college park to get a sandwich, first off college park sucks, too many one ways and no u-turns, and overall I do not care for the area. Especially since my nice small sedan is in the shop and I'm stuck with a f-250 diesel right now, that being said I ordered a Italian cold cut and a drink, before I could even put my card back in my wallet it was ready. Sandwich was a little dry( but I like my Italian cold cut from the pre made fridge at litteris so it's all soaked). It wasn't all that bad. Plus on the crushed ice for the fountain drinks.
  18. My favorite ma po tofu has got to be at Great Wall Scezhuan house on 14th. Never seemed overly salty to me. Course I drink and taste a whole lotta different shit everyday so who knows.
  19. They have burrata on the menu right now, and it's very very fresh. I didn't ask whether they're making it in house but its probably second best I've had to the one I was served at Komi, this version while needing a bit of salt came with sultanas, pine nuts, cherry tomatoes and blanched peeled asparagus was awesome. Oh there was 3 big ass slices of prosciutto too. And your never gonna fucking believe me but its 9.50. It was silly tonight, me and the lady had that, fried calamari a half liter of red wine I had veal parm(obviously) and she the veal with artichokes then we split a zabaglione. Bill was 75. Y'all gotta leave the city more often.
  20. There's a place on Dorsey road by arundel mills mall called little spice, I know it's not really Baltimore but its less then 10 miles outside of the city, the eggplant salad and tiger sweep are outstanding. The entrees are very nice too but I personally just order a bunch of the salad type dishes and a Thai tea. They'll make it as hot as you want and the prices are what you'd expect for the area. Also the desserts are pretty tasty.
