On a whim, what are you up to?

So I'm unexpectedly headed down to DC for dinner, and have no plans at the moment. Essentially I'm looking for a place to have a nice dinner, some wine or cocktails. Bar or dining room seating is fine. I'm looking at Firefly or Corduroy (though am trying to make plans to do the tasting menu there soon, not tonight) as potential ideas, are those ones that would fit the bill? Would you recommend sitting at the bar or in the dining room? Other suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Normally I don't make quite this last minute of plans!

Firefly and Corduroy are great choices. Eating at the bar at Corduroy is doable, but Firefly can be a bit cramped for a relaxing meal.

A good spot to sit at the bar and enjoy some pasta would be Tosca. At least that's what I feel like at the moment.

We ended up at Firefly last night...had a great time and was very pleased with the restaurant, Chef Wabeck, and all the staff that took care of us (Rachel, David, and James). Definitely a place we'll be going back to. I'll post my more detailed thoughts in the restaurant thread.

Don, feel free to take care of this however you'd like.

Anyone have recommendations for a mellow dinner on Sunday night? I'm thinking something like the cafe at Palena (not open on Sundays)... any DC neighborhood except Penn Quarter, no sushi, moderate price. Right now I'm thinking Hank's Oyster Bar, or Dino. But I'd be open to other suggestions... Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure Hank's has enough space between tables to be considered mellow. Even though I'm a big guy, I normally don't have a big problem with restaurants being too tight. But I felt awfully clostrophobic at Hank's.

Easy. Notti Bianche. Look no further.

Anyone coming to Sugar&Champagne tonight at the Ritz?  It's a benefit for the Washington Humane Society.  $75, and you can buy at the door.  I'll be pouring our dessert wines (and maybe a few dry ones too, just for fun!)

We might be there tonight since I heard that dogs are welcome, although all three dobermans might be a bit too much

Starfish has offered to close the Notti Bianche bar for us during happy hour tomorrow if enough of us express an interest. He also hinted that there may be some enticing “legacy libations” for us to try. Closed or open bar, I will be there. And the bar area also seats 11, for anyone who may want to stay for dinner – the entire dinner menu is available. Interested?

Sounds good and I should be there by about 5:30p.

Starfish has kindly closed the bar for us tomorrow night. He did mention that the bar is small - it can accommodate about 15 of us at any given time. Not to mention the bartender. Given the staggered comings and goings, this should work out ok.

It looks like I, Mrs JPW, and Peanut will be in attendance tonight.

as peanut will be attending, combined with the fact that most people on the forum are non-smokers, the bar at notti bianche will be non-smoking for the evening.

i am looking forward to seeing old faces and meeting new people as well.

I appreciate that starfish, but please don't let us be the reason for others behavior to change.

As a parent who likes to take their kid out, I am used to having to evaluate whether smoke levels are too much for her. If they are, we leave. My problem, not the smokers.

While we will be regretfully unable to be there tonight, we will be there for dinner on Saturday night. The three of us will be throwing ourselves on your good graces to recommend dinner...

I'm sad to say I won't be able to make it tonight so if anyone is worried the bar area is a little small for the crowd, you can stake out my space. That said, I should warn you, I'm barely 5 feet tall, so I may not be leaving you too much room. Hope it's wonderful.

It's not all on the JPW family. Black Sheep and I are thrilled to hear of the non-smoking venue for the evening.
