  1. Despite political views that really aren't aligned with Vance's, I didn't react as strongly as I think most of you did. I didn't grow up in Appalachia, but I did grow up in what most people would describe as an inner-city school (40% graduation rate, multiple murders). You see so many people make so many bad choices and while you can empathize, you don't have to not judge those choices as simply being bad ones. I think where people differ is on the empathy side of why those choices were made. Where he'd simply push people to work a bit harder and make better choices, even in the face of more difficult circumstances, I'd lean more to creating a safety net that builds equality of opportunity. I see where he's coming from, just don't necessarily agree with the value system that drives it.
  2. The news from Linden was similar. I'll be making a point to buy cases at both when these vintages are released. The downside of terroir is the actual weather that can deal you a crappy hand once in a while. Apologies for the weather - I know it sucked for us but is far more financially and personally difficult for those that produce our favorite beverage.
  3. So I finally made it to Corduroy for dinner after meaning to go for so many years. Perhaps mistakenly I thought there had been a jacket and tie requirement which goes against my very ethos (modern slob in case anyone is wondering) - anyway the dress code is gone now if it ever existed and I was excited to try the place after so many wonderful reviews here. Went with a couple close friends who were happy to share in the adventure. I had the appetizer special, a smoked salmon/cream cheese affair that was quite good with the accompanying bread. Followed that with the chicken two ways - confit and roasted - that was wonderful. Really enjoyed this dish immensely. Perhaps what helped that was the wonderful wine recommendation from Marc Slater, who stopped by to say hi and to suggest a really great red that all three of us enjoyed. I'd be glad to add this place to my standard repertoire, such as it is. Kudos for the wonderful cooking and hospitality.
  4. What's the point of a scholarship to attend one year of college? Duke is a non-profit institution set up for the purpose of educating students. Why should we care that it doesn't get a new crop of athletes who will pretend to be students for a year before they go off on their real career? BTW - I'm not opposed to college sports. I'd be just as happy with a system that paid players while they attended college as long as they did both.
  5. Totally agree with this. $125k isn't chump change - and it's potentially life changing for some of these eighteen year olds. Financial management classes would be huge - my understanding is that they're offered in the NBA today and many/most just ignore them. Truly a shame. And as an aside, I'm positive Jordan didn't finish college until well into his NBA days.
  6. I think it would be fairly easy to either sell the grapes directly into the bulk market or press them yourself (assuming you've got the gear) and see them into the bulk wine market. My understanding is that the bulk market is much, much bigger than most of us know.
  7. This isn't universally true, btw. Our local was extremely accommodating for our children (11 and 3 at the time). We ate dinner there regularly. I think the distinction comes down far more to the pub's focus (food and drinks or mostly drinks) than anything else.
  8. Wait for the forced sale in bankruptcy and start going again? Also recommend a good Twitter tirade. Hold your rattle in one hand and just pound away on that phone with the other.
  9. Be careful with that: Jun 4, 2018 - "A Broken Heart: Risk of Heart Disease in Boutique or Grain-Free Diets and Exotic Ingredients" by Lisa M. Freeman on vetnutrition.tufts.edu
  10. I'm not sure it wouldn't have worked absent the whole 'culture of sexual harassment getting reported in the WaPo' thing. Those places were all packed until that story hit. Traffic in Bethesda still looks to be at half the level it was prior to the news stories. Hopefully the industry learns how not to treat employees (or allow employees to treat each other) from all the damage we've seen the last couple years.
  11. Love huitlacoche, but really could have done without the photos. One of those dishes far less appealing in whole form than prepped.
  12. Annals of confirmation bias. I've had this theory about Mercedes drivers in particular for years....
  13. Just thanking everyone for the contributions above. Headed to Dubrovnik in a month for a wedding.Great to get some insights from those whose palates I feel like I know - even if we've never met.
  14. Mastercard & Visa agreed to allow it in a settlement. Then that settlement was overturned (in part because small businesses opposed it). The courts say AmEx can prohibit it. Where this ends is anyone's guess.
  15. There are serious equity and privacy issues with going to a cashless society, but by and large the world is moving this way quickly. Worth reading how countries as different as India and Sweden are pushing this move as well. On the other side of equity, is it fair to force an establishment to accept cash? Small amounts of cash create the same fixed costs of getting it to the bank as large amounts. All that gets translated into the price of your food or sweater. Why can't they choose to lose your revenue if you can't pay with a card?
  16. Resurrecting this - hoping to take a class on butchery and couldn't find anything active. Any ideas?
  17. I go once or twice a month for lunch - new office is right next door. I'm a fan. Mostly stick with the Akira ramen (which I think is a tonkotsu) but have also tried the volcano and the tantanramen (basically dan dan noodles in a broth). Latter is a bit heavy, but all are good to very good. Hope this place does well as the crowds have started to die down a bit - lunch yesterday was in a mostly empty restaurant at 12:30.
  18. When we moved to the Bethesda area over a decade ago I brought my five or six year old daughter to Uncle Julio's (we had been deep in Salvadoran territory in Columbia Heights prior to this). After about five minutes she asked if she had to finish her food because she didn't like it. I had already stopped eating. I'll buy into Cactus Cantina/Lauriol Plaza and ate both places not infrequently, but Uncle Julio's is simply a step too far for me - and yes I've tried it since.
  19. Never - although I constantly look at Capital Wine School's sold out classes - and the wine education dinners at restaurants that I attended and relied on for years are dwindling more and more each year.
  20. In the same vein as DaveO's response, I thought G&T fans would at least enjoy trying the variant at Rasa if they're in the neighborhood. The tonic is infused with Indian spices (not sure of the exact blend) and mixed with Green Hat gin. I've had a couple and enjoyed them.
  21. Ditto to this. The salads have also been quite good each time I've been. The Hot Mess is my favorite. Have also had a couple make your owns, the Margherita, and the Mushroom.
  22. Italy might be perfect for this. Orvieto is within a short drive to most of Tuscany (wine, history, cycling) and is a very pretty walled city. If you want to go more urban you could go full on tourist and do Florence but my off the wall suggestion is Bologna. it's the center of the spoke for Italy's train system, has the best food in all of Italy, and has some phenomenal day trips within 1.5-2 hours either by train or car. It's actually cheaper to fly into than Milan, Venice, or Florence for some odd reason from the States as well. On the car theme, Ferrari and Lamborghini are headquartered nearby.
