  1. not cask-beer related but beer related was picking up a few things at Magruders in CT Ave yesterday when I noticed large bottles of Delirium Noel on sale for 4.99 (reg 9.99) I picked up a few to taste and if I like it I'll be back for more. This is an excellent price for a Belgian..... thought some folks would like to know
  2. I have a theory that I call the "Swingers paradox". Now before everyone starts getting too excited I'm talking about the movie Swingers w/ John Favreau and Vince Vaughan. When it came out in 96 all my friends immediately pronounced it the greatest movie they had ever seen. When I finally got around to seeing it a few months later, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about - while it was a good, funny movie, my expectations had been elevated so much by others that I was expecting some genre-shattering occurrence, which didn't happen. Corduroy defied the Swingers paradox last night. For a good 18 months I've read reports on this and other boards giving testament to the quality of the dishes Tom Power was creating, and while I did spend one Chimay-fueled, slightly rowdy evening in the bar area back in March with 15 or 20 colleagues and snacked on the lumpia, I had never really eaten there. We've been planning on going for ages but one thing or another always cropped up - once we made a reservation close to a major holiday, only to discover that they were offering a set menue that night and I wanted to be able to order from the whole menu so we passed, another night a sick child intervened etc etc. Well last night we finally made it with our daughter and my parents in tow. Quite simply the food was divine. We started with some lumpia, which managed to be faithful to my mother-in-law's (and Rissa's moms) versions while also being different. We all had soups, my wife and I had the red snapper bisque (at first I did not see it on the menu and was worried but it was available as a special) and my folks the cauliflower parmesan soup. Both were excellent. The bisque in particular was sublime, wonderfully rich and packing an intense flavor. The taste I had of the cauliflower soup was also good. For entrees I had the pork belly, my wife had the scallops, my mom had halibut and my dad had the wagyu beef. The pork belly........OH MY GOD.....words literally fail me. After the first unctuous little parcel of fat and flesh slid down my throat I think my eyes rolled into the back of my head. Its THAT good. It was served on some cabbage but I didn't care, it was all about getting the pork belly in MAH BELLY. The next 10 minutes were all about trying to savor every molecule of taste from this amazing dish. Although I was feeling quite full by now I took one for the team and bravely accepted one of my wifes scallops. Each scallop is served atop a mushroom on a bed of mashed potatoes with a chardonnay sauce. The scallops were nicely seared, and the mushrooms, potatoes and scuae all combined to give each mouthful a delicate truffly flavor. My moms halibut was also pronounced as delicious by a notoriously fussy eater. My Dads loved his steak. Based on the mouthful I had I would probably prefer the steak at Bucks but that is neither here nor there. We opted for dessert to go as our daughter was getting a little tired. The desserts were not only tasty but also withstood a 30 minute drive back to our house - I was particularly fond of the Kit Kat dessert. Thanks to Rissa, Ferhat (nice wine suggestion), Pamela, and of course Tom for a lovely early dinner. I hope everyone has fun at the happy hour tonight.
  3. we're finally, FINALLY going there tonight (I've happy houred there but not dined there) - really looking forward to it!
  4. We're having a cookie party with some neighbors this weekend. Do any Rockwellians have any killer cookie recipes they'd like to share? Thanks
  5. you know, you have a point there, I do remember enjoying their milkshakes......but I stick to my 'yeuch' for their other offerings....
  6. We use Joy of Cooking quite a bit for certain recipes and as a general resource guide We've also been getting quite a lot of mileage out of the new Giada De Laurentis book....have made several tasty dips and a very nice pork tenderloin w/ port wine sauce last night
  7. 'eh'!!! nope, much, MUCH worse than just 'eh', even at best A perfect storm of disgusting food and slovenly service.....but then again I'm probably just bitter because a 'waitress' (and I use that term VERY loosely) once dropped a pot of tea in my lap , and didn't even see the need to apologize
  8. HA! I think its their apple pancake, I like to call it an 'ode to obesity' - you can also order it a la mode if you don;t think its filling enough on its own I like OPH - good basic breakfast food/pancakes and I do like their other 'house special', the Dutch Baby - reminds me a little of the pancakes my mother used to make on Pancake (Shrove) Tuesday
  9. belated posting due to travel had lunch at 2 Amy's on Vets day - the pizza was back to its former glory after some 'good but not great' pies on our last visit - we had a margarita which was characterized by the most generous dollops of mozzarella I've seen on a 2 Amy's pizza, and another pizza w/ pancetta and arucola also had the meatballs which were their usual yummy selves I ordered razor clams as an app - didn't actually know exactly what I was ordering but always like to try new things - they were grilled w/a little olive oil, lemon and parsley - not sure what I was expecting but I wasn't that impressed (and in general I love shellfish)
  10. I'd just like to add my voice to the others who disagree with your statement - children can and do behave appropriately in restaurants, if taught to do so by their parents. The chain v non-chain argument is irrelevent
  11. it really depends on who's pouring it....but then again I'm one of those snobs who only believes in drinking draught Guinness in Ireland.....silly, I know but everyone's entitled to their foibles
  12. Do they even have a formal happy hour (which to my mind conjures up some kind of food or wine/drink specials)? Regardless, I'd be happy to meet up with fellow Rockwellians at Bucks for some libations any time (I just have to roll down Nebraska Ave to get home )
  13. thanks for the tips - will report back - I may not have that much time to get out and about - right now Sunday night is looking like my best bet
  14. Howdy folks: I'll be in Phoenix next week. Any DR.com favorites out there? (Am also perusing the eG forums on this topic but would appreciate any help) Many thanks
  15. wow - it was quite a scene at Busboy's and Poets on Friday night - first of all the place is HUGE, second, it was HOPPING - I finally found my friends nestled in the corner close to the stage Given how busy it was I did not have high hopes on the food/service end of things but was pleasantly surprised - service wasn't lightning fast but just as you would start to think "I wonder when I'll get that Delerium Tremens...." it would appear.... Food wise we ordered two pizzas as apps - a chicken one that was not very memorable and a goat cheese and mushroom with a pesto sauce that was very good I ordered a burger, medium and it arrived exactly as ordered - it was tasty as well Visually, the space is a treat as well, especially the "Peace" wall and there was also a slide show on the screen for the duration of our stay there Free wi-fi, comfy couches, good beers and good food - a welcome addition to the Washington scene
  16. This is along the same lines as the "Is it ok to criticize certain restaurants thread?". This is a great board, HOWEVER, some people feel the need to lash out / overreact when they see a post that doesn't quite fit into their narrowly defined definition of what is good and proper in the DC food/restaurant world...... Golden ticket ate at a chain.....big deal Someone didn't like a certain restaurant that most people love.....big deal I'm reminded of the scene in The Life of Brian where he yells at the crowd "You're all individuals" and the all reply in unison "Yes, we're all individuals"
  17. not the ones we had.....I guess YMMV depending on the day I didn't realize Wheatberry was a chain - I'm actually surprised the one in CP is still in business - whenever I pass by its empty
