  1. Got some goading also to must try the Pork & Lychee Salad along with the prior mentioned Foie Gras French Toast. Might attempt to go early tonight. Say hi if you see me, if I go I'll probably be in the back bar
  2. Respectfully speaking, are we really holding popup-up restaurants to blow me away? (which especially aren't shooting for high-end / high-priced gastronomical experiences like Suna, talked to both Aaron Silverman & BJ at length last night and didn't get that impression). What ever happened to simply being 'pleasantly happy' or how I try to initially gauge a place ... 'would I want that dish again / I'd like to see what the full menu will hold'?. I went last night and tried the Pork Fat Pho (would like to try this again or other noodle dishes like their take on ramen), Fried Chicken pickle-brined w/ Honey and Benne seed (liked but imo could use heat, I sampled with Crystal Hot Sauce and sriracha -- still thinking about what I'd like to change), Crispy Goat with Saffron Honey / Goat Milk Ricotta / Roasted Garlic on top (still being worked-on admittedly by Aaron), Popcorn Soup w/ Poached Lobster and Ice Cream w/ Grassy Olive Oil and Toasted Bread Crumbs (hint let the ice cream melt & merge with the other flavors). Of the dished I tried I noted the sweetness of the Fried Chicken and Crispy Goat (i.e. honey), but with a limited menu lineup for a popup / before launch situation that's fine. I'd like to explore a full menu eventually to see how flavors get adjusted. Many of those dishes I was happy with last night, enough to say that I look forward to their summer-ish opening and seeing how they continue to evolve the initial launch menu.
  3. Gotta say that of the available places in DC that offer Steak and Cheese or (attempt) to offer a Cheesesteak, I do heart the "Nice N' Greasy Steak N' Cheesy" sammies currently available at Ray's to the 3rd. The Shock-G (1/3 pound of quality ribeye, grilled onions & mix of provolone and american cheese on an 8" roll) has really good flavor and nicely filling. More of a 'cheesesteak hoagie' where I grew up (with the tomatoes and lettuce). I don't think I need to stuff myself with the larger 2/3 pound ribeye 2x cheese "The Biggie" (my cholesterol level thanks me). In comparison to Taylor Charles Steak and Ice's cheesesteak (tried several times) flavor-wise Nice N Greasy Steak N Cheesy wins out easily imo. Note: sides are extra, in case you're wondering whether the taters below are included or not. Price for sides are cheap though. EDIT: Avoiding the 'take food pics at a restaurant' discussion. If using a smartphone to take pics considered the free app Snapseed (iOS or Android). Lots of nice processing capability (at least to use on a smartphone).
  4. Bump to note that I noticed as I walked by Divino Lounge in the past couple of days and saw that it had closed. Looks like this happened back in December-ish
  5. The Post uses a fairly robust Content Mgmt System (CMS). I happen to know as I'm a IT consultant that once interviewed years ago with them for a gig in their web operations and generally know the underlying technology used there. The short answer is that it's super simple to choose whether to post / display nearly ANY piece of regularly-produced of content on that website. Content such as restaurant reviews is only a matter of a business call (i.e. business sponsor who owns that section of the website), not a technology challenge / bureaucracy issue. IT in today's world doesn't run web content for F500 companies. EDIT: and sorry Don, I'm contributing to this now well-off-topic convo. Back to munching on food.
  6. There's certainly enough disposable $ out there and you're right about the dining landscape.
  7. Gervais, Welcome as well to DR.com, and thanks for introducing yourself (nice pedigree of places you've worked at!). Looking forward to eating your dishes in the upcoming months.
  8. Really a shame, I really enjoyed the one time that I went and looked forward to going again sometime this month. Echoing above, I went on a Thursday night a few weeks ago around 7:30pm with a +1 and only 2 other small tables were populated during our entire stay (we left for the speakeasy rez around 9:45). I hope the decision wasn't due to not being able to await for more press coverage / public awareness to fill tables.
  9. For the build-your-own pizza, the last time I ordered a basic made-to-order 9" sausage pizza for close to $20 (build-your-own starts as a white pizza for $11 or $12, then add $3 each for cheese and sausage). I wouldn't necessarily qualify that as value. For contrast, the price for pizza at Range or Ardeo (i.e. restaurants that happen to have pizza on the menu) is cheaper relatively.
  10. Niiiiice! Good pickup. Now please work on tasteful sound deadening And since it's American cuisine with southern emphasis .... cough ... bring back the Commonwealth Fried Chicken (or something almost exactly like it lol) ... cough
  11. I stopped by here for lunch this past Wednesday to have the Chivito (it's been a year since I last had it) and checkout the new digs. Same good flavors as before (I'd love a better roll though). The fries I had just came out of the kitchen and were hot. Good meal. Talked with Manuel (I think) who welcomed me as I sat / ate at the bar. Seems like they'll be shooting for the weekend bar crowd by staying open for food till 5am (alcoholic beverages will wrap-up around midnight). Of the available choices at the end of the night, I could see folks coming here for post-night drunk food lol.
  12. I assumed Zeke's donuts (based on their initial comments I've read of folks that've sampled their product) would be not that dissimilar to FP's. I personally didn't mind FP (but it was nothing special that I had to go out of my way to come back), but my waistline disagreed lol. Location I felt was an issue at the Dupont branch. On weekends, I hardly ever saw anyone frequent around 23rd and P (sorta of a forgotten place) but perhaps that's changed (I doubt it though). At least KK is RIGHT at the metro entrance / exit.
  13. Are you thinking of the Rockville location (edit: Duh, I can't read). There was a Fractured Prune location in Dupont (23rd and P, right near where this place is located) that I was referring to which closed before the Rockville store did. You''re right about the Rockville location, hours sucked there.
  14. Nice touch for Bucher to open in Philly. Will have to take my friends there when I visit home. We grew up knowing that we could regularly get a great entree meal in the neighborhoods for under $20. They still shake their heads at me when I say that mid-20s average is reasonable (blame living in NYC and DC for that revised thinking lol)
  15. Oh sorry, I did have a couple of cocktails at the bar (had a reservation there scheduled 2 hours after the start of dinner at Suna) with my +1. My 2 cocktails were on-point and strong, at least the ones I chose lol (it would have been Rye or Bourbon based, strong spirits enough and they weren't doing light pours). Didn't capture the names though at the time (and no website) which I do try to note when I post, but I was wrapped in a convo with the +1 while I was there and didn't even think to capture a pic of the list. But I did like them. I'm more of a off-menu drinker regularly if I trust the staff well enough (Hogo / Passenger, WIsdom, Gibson, PX, etc). I need another go there to really focus on the drinks, but I did like the drinks they served us, There wasn't a large list like Gibson, so I'm likely going to try off-menu if they're up for it.
  16. Stopped by here yesterday after doing the 4-course tasting menu at Suna (me was happy, I'm getting counter seats next time and enjoy the show watching the kitchen do their thang). I reserved it while making the Suna rez. Not a bad space for some post-dinner drinks. Lots of locals who I didn't see at all while eating at Suna. Dimly lit, decent initial list of preformatted drinks, but I spied a good selection of spirits to try off-menu drinks next time. Friendly welcome and service by bar manger Maro. I believe that Maro stated to me that they're moving to a less hush-hush approach with providing the contact number (don't hold me to that though). Should be quite popular with the Eastern Market crowd (and much closer for many than walking to Wisdom), this would be a regular spot for me when I used to live here. EDIT: So here's the news that they're partnering with CityEats for reservations with a few spots available for walk-ins.
