  1. We have been here a few times now and is quickly becoming a family favorite. Our quick take on the food: Lobster Roll - must have every time we go. We always go for the cold version and have not been disappointed. Whole Belly Clams - again always perfectly fried and a healthy portion size. Steamers - great when they have them but last two times we have gone they were out. Whole Steamed Lobster - wife had it once and raved about it, nice 1-1/4 lb lobster fresh from the tank - does not get much better. Calamari - oddly every time (3 times) we have tried to order the spicy version we have been told they are out. Strange. Clam Chowder - Tried the Rhode Island style last weekend as it was part of the restaurant week meal. Very disappointing, don't think I saw a hint of clam in it. Lobster Deviled Eggs - Did not sound appealing to me but the table ordered 3 last weekend and the opinion was not good. Just not a good combination. Fries - Average, nothing special. Cole Slaw - Portion size seems to have increased from previous visits As others have noted the beer list is the best in Bethesda, wife also tried and loved the Bloody Mary.
  2. We have been 5 times now with parties ranging from 4 to 8 people and our steaks have always been served at the ordered temperature, including the second batch. He did not say poor selection of wines but limited. The pace here is no different than Ray's and we have never been rushed out the door even with people waiting for a table.
  3. We have been here a handful of times usually with the kids (10 and 7). It's not perfect but we always leave happy and well fed. Our meat has always been served as ordered, bread is warm and fresh, and salad is what it is. The only variable seems to be the fries, sometimes perfect and sometimes lukewarm and not salted. The limited wine list is fine. Our kids love the sundae, which they happily split into to two and we have also enjoyed the apple pie and cheesecake. Service is always friendly and accommodating. We will continue to hit here whenever the kids ask for steak. Not sure I understand why Sietsema continues to take shots at this place as did again in his chat today.
  4. Convinced a couple coworkers to try this place today for lunch and glad we did - kicking myself for not coming sooner. The butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, curry chicken and rogan josh were all great. The vindaloo was spicy which I was happy about as most places seem to tone it down. The naan was also fresh and served warm. Not sure what is going to happen to this place once the redevelopment starts.
  5. Might be helpful if they added a menu to the website. At least in my case I like to get a general idea of options/pricing before heading to a new place.
  6. Thanks for saving me the trip - was thinking of heading there this weekend to check it out. Think we will hit Spice Xing instead.
  7. Looks like another location coming to the former Againn space in Rockville. "Former Againn Tavern Tentatively Turning Into a Chef Geoff's" by Carole Sugarman on bethesdamagazine.com
  8. From a Yelp review: "My meal was interesting, I got the lobster roll ($19) which was good but overpriced. Should be about $10 in my opinion." Good luck on your quest for a $10 lobster roll.
  9. Recently had some pretty good BBQ for lunch at High on the Hog. Great people run the place - small inside but a patio with a couple table out back.
  10. Noticed they are no longer open for lunch on weekdays, Saturday and Sunday only. Hoping this is just for the summer. Work in the area and this was in our rotation of places for sit down lunches. Also, love this place for happy hour - has this changed also?
  11. I missed lunch yesterday so I stopped in for happy hour on my way home. Had a Victory Pilsner ($5), 1/2 dozen oysters ($6), and the Addie's mussels ($8, shows as $7 on their on-line menu). Oysters were Rappahanock and Chicouteague and were fresh and perfectly shucked. Mussels were huge in comparison to mussel bar and probably about 18-20 in the serving. The happy hour deals here are pretty solid and I am surprised it does not get more attention. What stood out to me on this visit was the service. When I arrived at 4:30 I was the only one in the bar area. Shortly after my arrival a party of 3 arrived and included a gentleman who apparently grew up in the area and talked about the changes in the neighborhood. He then asked for a Budweiser (its all he drinks). He could not believe they did not carry it and he could not find anything else on the beer list that he would drink (Alagash White, Victory, Brooklyn Lager, Stella on tap). He finally settled on an Amstel Light but continued to complain. The bartender did not blink, asked him if he wanted Bud or Bud Light, took some money out of the register and went next door to MacArthur Beverage and bought the guy a 6 pack of Bud. Good stuff and not uncommon in places run by the Blacks.
  12. Have some family coming in town in a couple weeks and would like to take them to Ray's one night for their 1st time. Can someone refresh me as to when and if the Bistro special is still available and is it for walk-ins only or also in the reservation area.
  13. Strasburg Happen to be spending a night in Strasburg, VA this weekend and I am in charge of arranging dinner for 4 adults and 4 kids. Any suggestions?
  14. My folks came into town last weekend and they stopped in for lunch. They had the lobster roll which they told me is now $14 (down from $15) but no longer served with fries. Online menu still shows $15.
  15. Happened to walk by tonight and sign in the window said closed for renovations. Can't be a good sign when they have been open for only 6 months.
  16. Stopped in for lunch last Friday around 12:30 or so. Grabbed a seat at the bar - only 2 other people in the bar area and may 4-6 on the other side. Had the Belly Clam platter ($15) with onion rings and cole slaw. Clams were perfectly seasoned and fried an a healthy portion - I tried counting but lost track. Onion rings (I think 5 huge rings) were was very tasty - only finished 3 of them though as it is just too much fired food for me. The cole slaw seems to be an afterthought in both the size and taste - bartender apologized for the size. Washed everything down with an Allagash White draft ($6.50 - compared to $9 at Mussel Bar). Great quick lunch. They did not have any steamers when I was there which was a little disappointing but will be back to try those on my next visit. Noticed they are also now offering a shrimp salad roll - don't recall the price but bartender claimed it was very good.
  17. Looks like Shake Shack, Blue Smoke, El Verano Taqueria, and Box Frites open tonight. http://www.washingtonian.com/blogarticles/19824.html
