  1. Hi Kat, don't want to make you or anyone else jealous, but my brother and his family are good friends with Dario and my nephew has spent a couple of weeks doing apprenticeships with Dario in Italy. And check this out: Last year we were having brunch at Sadelle's in NYC when who should walk in but Dario (wearing his signature vest) and his family and friends. Hugs were exchanged and cheeks kissed even though Dario didn't know most of us from Adam. Great guy! This should be an awesome event!
  2. Ah geez, I hope AhSo makes a go of it. For a booming area that's the backbone of what is now known as the "richest county in the US," SE Loudoun is a devil of a time getting and keeping better restaurants. The Avonlea development on 50 is completely stalled due to the lack of tenants beyond the Cinepolis movie theatre. (Although we are hearing rumors of enough tenants signing leases to allow the project to move forward soon)
  3. Yeah, on my last visit I got a petit sandwich. I think ham and cheese. Gotta say, for $2.95 it was good. The prices in there are really not bad. I think NYC has really taken to this place. BTW, Lady M Cakes down the block on W. 40th apparently had a pop-up at Union Station earlier this year. Anyone know if they are coming down permanently as well?
  4. Unfortunately can't compare MK NYC to MK Paris. BTW there are around ten MKs in NYC now. I've only tried the one on W 40th St (Bryant Park). (Same block as Lady M cakes, btw). The baguettes are incroyable My NY brothers and friends all love them. And those financiers. Damn good. I'm fairly optimistic about the baguettes at the DC outposts since we have good water here (maybe not quite as good as NYC water but still good).
  5. Anyone else had the pleasure of trying a Maison Kayser in NY or elsewhere? These places are going to kick ass. The baguettes are considered the best in NYC, and pastries -- financiers, eclairs, tarts etc -- are killer. http://maison-kayser-usa.com/
  6. I could think of a worse obit headline than "Len Berk, lox man."
  7. Yeah, some of the bbq places right off 95 generally are not the best. Back before the kids came along, I used to do some bbq runs down south. It was much harder pre-internet. I remember driving around with a New York Times clipping.
  8. Yeah that's what I was expecting. Poke for me, pasta for my son, etc. But wait, according to the Washingtonian article, there's going to be a mini-food court inside the Eatery: The Dining Hall Can’t decide where to eat? This 120-seat sit-down restaurant pulls from five Isabella Eatery spots, serving a menu that mixes Pepita tacos with Requin raw bar, Arroz tapas, and Yona sushi. Sounds to me like the old joke about the Starbucks inside the Starbucks.
  9. I've never been to a Tad's but I think it was the famed novelist (and now more of a screenwriter) Richard Price (a Bronx boy), who featured Tad's in one of his early (70s) books as a place where a HS kid would take his date to impress her and guarantee a score. I got a good sense of the place from his writing.
  10. LOL Double whammy -- stale Sysco and no Route 11 chips!
  11. That sucks -- what year was that? Because now when I'm in an unfamiliar area, I generally rely on Yelp. I know it has its faults, but it's helped me have good meals in some really odd locales. Places that are literally in the middle of nowhere. And it can tell you if a chain in fact is your best bet.
  12. LOL your post reminds me of a long-gone chain (there are still a few left out west) called Black Eyed Pea, where my go-to meal was, yep, fried okra and chicken-fried steak (AKA slab o'meat covered in white goo). CB does have pretty good food.
  13. Mrs. W. and I had a nice meal at Clementine in June but I'm sad to report that it has again closed. Aug 9, 2017 - "All Signs Point to Clementine's Closure, Again" by Sarah Meehan on baltimoresun.com
  14. One thought -- back in the day, families would stop at a national chain vs some local place because you knew what you'd be getting (see, e.g., Mad magazine's "Johnson Howard's" feature from 1966. Now, because you know what you'd be getting at a national chain, you can feel safe bypassing it in favor of the local places, which are now easy to find and take a chance on.
  15. I got a patty melt at the Johnny Rockets in Brambleton a while back. It really sucked. In fact, the whole meal sucked. That is a bad Johnny Rockets. The patty melt I got at the Freddy's in Fairfax more recently was much better.
  16. I'm pretty sure "RI-style" calamari was created, or at least first appeared on a menu, at a place called Trattoria D'Antuono on Federal Hill in Providence in the 80s. Nice little homey place. My dad, a trencherman of some repute, loved it. Chronology-wise, it would make sense since it then went "big time" on the first Capital Grille menu in 1990.
  17. We've always enjoyed the fried squid at Clyde's. It's a nice portion with plenty of tentacles. I'm from RI, so I know my squid. Capital Grille (founded in RI) also does a nice job with "RI-style" fried calamari with hot peppers. I'll definitely second the idea of Thai restaurants for squid too. Can't vouch specifically for that one, but definitely something I'd look for on a Thai menu.
  18. It's a shame that the best national bagel chain can't figure out how to do better in this market.
  19. Mrs. W and I celebrated out 21st anniversary at LCF Saturday night. I have no problem reporting that the food was better than I remembered from our previous visit a few years ago. I also have to say that the full dinner is simply too much food for us now (and they added to the fun by giving us an extra side and dessert for our anniversary). I barely ate all day and I still estimated that I took in well more than the 2000 calories that I had allotted for the meal. Next time we will try Jacques' Brasserie.
  20. There once was a Cambodian place in these parts called Angkor Wat, IIRC. Guessing its been gone for at least 15 years.
  21. ABP was my iced coffee go-to for my Boston-Brookline-Cambridge years in the mid-80s. I have gone much less here in DC ever since they started putting the calorie counts on everything.
