  1. Me, I'd go for the two birds, two methods approach. If I was going to take on the single bird, I'd break it down before cooking and start the legs/thighs to roast well ahead of the breast
  2. I made a marvelous soup with an orange cauliflower recently. About equal parts of homemade chicken stock and chopped up cauliflower in a 6-qt pot, plus one small sweet potato and a big clove of garlic, boiled about 12 minutes -- until the cauliflower lost the strong cabbage-y smell, took off the heat, whizzed together with an immersion blender, added salt and white pepper and about a teaspoon of garam masala. It was lovely to see, thick and creamy, and delicious. I've got more cauliflower so I'll be makiing that again soon.
  3. I'd forward that photo to the restaurant so they see what their customer sees on a take-out order and have a chance to re-do the packaging/presentation.
  4. The last time I went, I noticed a marked increase in the amount of sour cream being used per serving. The rest of the ingredients seemed about the same portion-wise. But that overdose of sour cream really made the meal unpalatable -- and I love sour cream. I'll leave it off next time or get some on the side.
  5. I remember a line from M*A*S*H*, with Hawkeye describing how to make the perfect martini: Get a glass, a bottle of gin, and pour the gin into the glass while staring very hard at a bottle of vermouth.
  6. I just don't have a lot of information on the new folks and how they're running things there. My contacts were with Eric and going back in time.
  7. Posted Yesterday, 06:23 PM Posted Yesterday, 06:36 PM 13 minutes to sellout. On a Friday evening. Wow. Good thing I had already determined that my budget couldn't take the hit right now or I'd be sorely disappointed.
  8. Not the same owners anymore. Eric may be working for the new folks, but the company & name was sold to someone else. The spelling should be with an "e" (as was the name of the original proprietor downtown), but the new owners/mgt may have dropped it along the way.
  9. How about an avocado buttercream? http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/avocado-buttercream-frosting-recipe.html
  10. apologies if this has already been posted. I hadn't seen it. http://mind.ucsd.edu/misc/diversions/sartre-cookbook.html
  11. I'm sorry, but it turns out I wont' be able to make it. I have to attend a memorial service up in Lancaster that day. Y'all have fun and eat well!
  12. thank you for letting me know about the secret menu! I will check it out next time.
  13. My sister and I decided to check this fairly new to the 'hood restaurant tonight, Thai by Thai. It's in the Bradlick shopping center in Annandale, and there are two other locations, Fairfax and Sterling. A small place where you order at the counter and they bring it out to you. We got the garden rolls, tom yum soup, green papaya salad and crispy basil duck. We started giggling when they brought out the garden rolls. Honestly, they looked like a couple of green penises in condoms. Then the jokes about the dipping sauce started, naturally. They were pretty tasty -- rice paper wrappers around a full dark green lettuce leaf, then filled with julienned veggies and ground chicken. The dipping sauce had very mild chilies and was duck-sauce-sweet. The green papaya salad was generous on the papaya (no shredded cabbage to fill it out as I've seen some places) but skimpy on the peanuts and green beans and almost no heat from the chilies in the dressing, but there was chili oil, chopped green chilies and pepper flakes on the table if you wanted to spice things up. The tom yum soup had far too much fish sauce in it, which drowned out the other flavors. The crispy basil duck was also quite mild but also nice and crisp and very tasty otherwise. Overall, I'd say Americanized thai that had some bright spots but certainly not worth a detour. Since thai food is not common on this stretch of Braddock Road, and this is on the way home, I can see picking up a few things here from time to time once I learn what else to pick or avoid on the menu.
  14. I'm not sure yet. Work has been about four times as crazy as normal, and on the weekends I just try to get my head back together to face the next onslaught.
  15. Definitely my Sicilian cauliflower. Probably also some gluten-free lemon bars and some sort of meat dish
  16. Hey, I saw in another thread how much you like the Carolina Gold rice. Find a source, buy in bulk, give up half to the family auction.
  17. Get some of Jamie Stachowski's sausages, keep 'em frozen. The Chicken Santa Fe sausage is a nice change-up from the usual sausage fare. Everyone I've ever served it to has loved it.
  18. I was surprised to find this thread -- my sister and I stopped in today for a quick lunch after shopping at the Target and still needing some stuff from Office Depot after that. We both got simple pita wrap sandwiches -- hers the chicken shwarma, me the falafel. Mine had a bit of a bitter taste to it the first few bites; probably picked up some leftover char off the grill, but it got better as I ate. Their falafel is a mix of fava and chickepeas, and it certainly didn't have that pronounced chickpea flavor that I'm used to. It wasn't bad but I had my mouth set for garbanzos. My sister really liked her wrap - I didn't try it. However, there was a table of gentlemen who were getting quite an assortment of things -- salads, kabobs, hummus, lebnah, mezze platter -- and that all looked great, especially the shish tawouk. I will say, it's an awful name to put up on a sign in English -- at first glance, I though it said Roach Cafe.
  19. A favorite in my house is fried cauliflower rice -- just grate the cauliflower and use it in place of the rice. I like to stir fry it solo for a bit so it gets a bit roasty on the edges and turns from that very cabbage-y flavor to a more nutty flavor. And I recently made a sort of cabbage stroganoff -- sliced white cabbage in a sour cream/mushroom/onion/parsley sauce with a dash of fresh nutmeg grated in.
  20. a few people at my office have gone for lunch (I haven't yet) and the consensus has been that the food is good but pricey for a quick lunch -- $11 - $15 for a sandwich, chips & drink.
