  1. Have been eating here for years. They closed last year due to a flood in the building and had to renovate. I have never had a bad meal here. The specials are great, the oysters and clams and salads steady. The made-to-order clam chowder is excellent. They have had a bouillabase as a special that is outstanding. Service is always consistent, and the maitre d actually went outside and put quarters in my meter when I asked him for change since I was there a little longer than exppected; went above and beyond. The bread is good and the open kitchen concept nice if you have kids who want to watch their food being prepared. Reasonable for the quality of food offered. Park at a meter on the side or one of the side streets, not at the shopping center.
  2. I am a sucker for a decent steak and cheese in NoVa. I went by and tried Jimmy's NY Pizza yesterday for a late lunch. Great stuff. This place is nothing as far as atmosphere, but the steak and cheese was worth the trip. The person cooking and who greeted me said they do a lot of carryout business. If you blink, you will miss this place. Tucked away in a very small strip mall off in an obscure commercial area of Sterling. Next time I will try the pizza - thanks for the recommendation.
  3. Brick and mortar or food truck, they have kept it simple and stick with what they know. Appear to planning a 3rd location in Frederick in the near future. Cannot go wrong if you have a craving for a Chicago style dog or sausage.
  4. Tysons location is alive and well - Have not had a bad meal here; Brunch, dinner or Thanksgiving (multiple years) - service has been good, worst part is location due to traffic in the immediate area. Wine list is decent, and if one does not feel like cooking for Thanksgiving, they do a nice meal with many options for adults and children. The menu is listed on their website. They also do a brunch which has great donuts, Bloody Mary's and benedicts. Stuff changes seasonally so best to check their website first for updated menus. Moderately priced for the NoVa area, suggest a reservation.
  5. Stopped in here again on my way back down 95 from points North. Chaps is steady. They recently opened location #2 in Aberdeen with an emphasis on franchising. The original kitchen is busy and staffed accordingly. This is the bare bones of pit beef. The sandwiches are good, reasonable and no frills. The location, right off Pulaski Hwy, is pretty basic and I can see why they opened a new location that appears to showcase an improved aesthetic appearance.
  6. So eat here quite frequently. The place is very good. The wait staff, can be a little hit-or-miss, but overall pretty consistent. From the specials that include a seafood ceviche salad usually offered late Summer into Fall to the homemade meatballs, flaming cheese and the lemon chicken soup, I am a fan. If you have not been and want to try it out, lunch is great for that. Parking can be a little challenging since it is housed on the main level of an office building (the former Tysons location of Chutzpah Deli). If you do not have a reservation (recommended), try the bar, there are several hightops as well as seats at the bar.
  7. Took a drive to the country a few months back and ate here on a Saturday evening. Nice drive and quaint town location. Service was excellent, food was also very good. Prices are reasonable given the level and quality of food. 4 of us dined for about $50/per person inclusive of a bottle of wine. Atmosphere is nice and host was very appreciative of our business. Place was very busy and by observation many of the locals were regulars.
  8. Solid homemade Italian food and pizza. Caesar Salad is excellent, just don't go back to work after as you will smell like a garlic clove. Specials are listed along with normal menu - you can't really go wroing with anything on the menu. They expanded next door and opened a gelato place (have not been there yet). Desserts at Ciao are good as well, save room. Staff is attentive and sincere.
  9. Breakfast - Ted's is good for offering a decent adult and even children's menu for the 1st meal of the day; all reasonably priced. Service is quick and food comes out efficiently. The Reston location has steady flow M-F, Saturday and Sunday are very busy anytime after 9 AM (if you don't want to wait, go before 9). Sadly, there are not many decent places for bfast in the suburbs. Many of the restaurants are Lunch and Dinner only, so having an option for breakfast is nice. Nice weather and you can sit outside - RTC is not typically traffic busy in the AM and on weekends many times the main roads are closed for special events. Pop tarts are great as is the redonkulous Cinnamon Bun (only offered on Sat/Sun).
  10. Neapolitan Pizza in Tysons: Crust Pizza. If I missed this place already covered, my apologies. Recently opened in the Tysons area 1/2 block off Route 123 and Old Courthouse. It is next door to the ABC store. If you want a great pizza and do not want to drive to Falls Church (Orso), or DC (2 Amys) or (Paradiso), give this place a shot. Decent seating and all new space. TVs usually have a soccer match on or NFL on Sunday. You order at the counter and they bring out your food. This is very casual, but also very good. Beer available. If you want a true wood-fired experience it is worth a shot. Reasonable $$ and salads are decent as well. Parking lot is in back of the restaurant.
  11. Check out Willards BBQ. It will require you to drive out of DC proper but it is not a bad drive. Highly consistent, no frills bbq and all the trimmings. Hard to get a seat here at lunch time, but their stuff travels well. Also a relative newcomer to the retail storefront concept is Mookies BBQ in Great Falls. They are not new to BBQ, but this is their 1st shot at a permanent location. From oversized salads, homemade sauces and everything made in-house from scratch. BBQ is excellent and service is good.
  12. This place has been around for 30+ years and I have been going there for a long time; had munch there yesterday. It took the place of Rudy's and has been able to withstand the changes in downtown McLean, which have not all been good. Open for special dinners on Thanksgiving, Christmas and some other holidays the food is fresh and consistent. Their service is fine and most of their wait staff has been there for a long time as well. The owner is almost always there as his son - and I have never had a bad experience or mediocre food. From appetizers (humus, baba ganoush, Sigara Boregi) to dessert the food, prep and presentation is always fine. Everything comes with a starter salad, and pita bread with butter. If you have not been there try a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday as their Turkish specialty, Doner Kabob, is freshly made that day and served over rice or pita bread with yogurt sauce. They always have a great Orange Baklava, a rose water pudding as well as other items. The Turkish coffee after dinner will keep you up at night so drink responsibly.
  13. Always looking for sushi and fresh fish, I thought it worth mentioning this place - excellent staff and selections of very fresh fish/sashimi or sushi rolls. Has been around since mid '80s in Arlington, relocated to hidden McLean location - I am always surprised by people who have never heard of this place. If you can, sit at the bar, these chefs take their time and are creative with their presentation. If adventurous ask them for something different, they are accommodating, and will surprise you. Staff is gracious, interior is showing wear and dated, however not worth focusing on. You cannot go wrong with one of their sashimi or sushi specials for lunch - to try it out. Their rolls are creative and flavors excellent. Parking can be a little challenging at busy lunch or dinner times - go at the early or latter part of either to avoid hassles.
  14. Reston location open for several months now in the space previously occupied by Macaroni Grill that closed without notice. Decor and retrofit buildout is nice, bright and contemporary. Plenty of free parking in shopping plaza a very short walk from Reston Town Center. Have indoor and outdoor seating (on a busy corner of Reston Parkway with stop lights). Wait staff and management attentive, but not overbearing. Food prices are average (pun intended). Large bar area with TVs and open kitchen concept for this chain. Jambalaya is good and packs a slight punch. Dumpling app is good as are salads. Their housemade bread and olive oil/parmesan cheese/red pepper flake that comes out with your drinks is killer. Sadly it is easy to fill up on this and not only overload with carbs, but be full enough to not eat your lunch or dinner. Place is usually pretty busy, but service and prep time will get you in and out efficiently while not feeling rushed.
  15. pizzas consistent and fair price for serving size, quality ingredients etc. They used to make a homemade gnochi that was excellent, however the last few times we have been there it is not on the menu. Atmosphere is a little noisy, but service is good and food fresh. Hosts are gracious and it never disappoints. Get the doughnuts for dessert, small but rich and just the right punch.
  16. Had lunch here this past week and have been here several times; they have the Bucko 46 which is roast beef done inhouse and hard to find anywhere in VA, served on a toasted garlic bread with onions and cheese . Service is fine, and much of their stuff is made onsite. Same ownership and most of the kitchen staff, could also be why it is consistent. Good for breakfast and lunch, have not been for dinner. Reasonable prices, overstuffed sandwiches, and bagels with plenty of cream cheese. Local restaurant surrounded by many national chains and franchises in this shopping plaza. Just a hunch, but if you read the menu, it is a NY Deli...not meant to be the warm friendly service we have grown to expect in NoVa. (that was a joke).
  17. Went to the original location in downtown DC bordering Chinatown this past weekend. Have been there before and it is consistently busy. Unfortunately they were a little slow on the uptake and our water and bottle of wine took 30 mins to arrive. Since we were with friends, it was not a huge deal, but we were trying to catch an event in an hour and we had pointed this out initially. Food was fine and value for the $$ was on par with an average DC restaurant.. Pizza,,salads and pasta are consistent and the daily specials usually pretty interesting as well.
  18. Been here numerous times and had the steak and cheese repeatedly; perfect combo of lean, marinated steak, onions, peppers, lettuce and cheese. They have a decent chicken sandwich as well and the pastrami is worth a solid mention; they accommodate should you have dietary restrictions. Place is always busy, wait times are only due to the fact everything is cooked to order, but more than reasonable. Weather permitting, sit outside.
