Philly-Style Sandwiches
Kev29 replied to Kibbee Nayee's topic in Washington DC Restaurants and Dining
I think a big difference between Italian beef in Chicago and Philly roast beef is that the former is usually uses meat roasted well in advance, refrigerated, sliced super thin in a deli slicer and brought back to life in the hot jus. And then dipped to some extent in the same jus. A Philly roast beef sandwich is just a freshly roasted warm sandwich but it's called a Philly roast beef sandwich because they're kind of up their own asses with the civic pride in their food thing ๐Sliced warm, kaiser roll, horseradish, maybe cheese, maybe hots? I've definitely had good ones up there though. Like the Cherry Street Tavern's -
Their Rockville (on the Pike across from Congressional Plazas) location has closed. For lease sign out front and it's been removed from their website.

Dean is really good about annotating his menu and offering gluten-free options at Dino's Grotto a few blocks away on 9th.

Bethesdans are a little slow on the uptake -- Kapnos Kouzina is still crowded when I walk by there in the evening. Even in dead-ass August.

Dog Haus Biergarten Bethesda
Kev29 replied to Pool Boy's topic in Washington DC Restaurants and Dining
Haven't been in the Dog Haus (though I'm familiar with concept ๐) but I drive by a lot and there's usually a decent crowd inside. Most tables occupied, though it's a pretty small space. There are 3 biergartens in Bethesda now. And probably a half dozen other beer focused places, which seems like a lot for a compact satellite city. I'm not complaining. -
Nationalize all malls and turn the food courts in to rent free dai pai dongs. Thx for your time ๐

Can't imagine ten better cones than the last one (mango ice cream) I had at Tropical Ice Cream in Silver Spring.

His face is all over Metro station ads too, for one reason: MGM. Basically his only ($$$$) focus right now.

Sorry yeah, my post wasn't really clear. I meant there are bars in downtown Silver Spring, Four Corners, Wheaton and (1 in) Kensington but nothing in between (Woodside, Montgomery Hills, Forest Glen, etc). Used to be a Dietle's right next to that Armand's when I was a kid.
-
Yep I hit the Corner Pub every now and then. Still good, food way better than average for a neighborhood bar. Not really my hood (hence Four Corners as the eastern edge of my imaginary bar desert map above) but certainly an easy Uber.
-
There isn't a single bar in the large part of Silver Spring between downtown SS, Wheaton, Four Corners and Kensington. Someone take over their liqueur license and hook me up!

Can anyone confirm that Google has the right hours? Crowdsourcing seems to be the best method for reliable Landrum info ๐

I'm assuming this is the 28oz cote du boeuf for two, right? Not the 14oz strip.

Normally have great experiences at Frankly, but last time (about a month ago) we ordered carryout since there were no large tables available. Walked back from the park to pick it up and our order somehow vanished. I was going to just leave it and go down to Dish & Dram but my wife paid for the order when she placed it. So they had to make it from that point, cost us 20 minutes with the kids hungry and frustrated. Took the pies home and they were a bit sloppy, doughy and over-sauced. All our trips had been great before then. We still drive farther to Pizza CS over Frankly most of the time because it's easier to get tables, order, have kids and other families there. Even though Frankly has better beer, wine, salads, we'll probably only head there for adults only nights and their great patio.
