  1. Reading about the closing of Taylor Gourmet reminded me that I hadn't been there for some time because Bub and Pop's was close, and so much better. Which, in turn, reminded me that I hadn't been to Bub and Pop's in some some time either. I remedied that today, and it's still fantastic, at least based on the Italian Hoagie. I wish they used plain lettuce instead of arugula, but other than that it's pretty much a perfect sandwich. Keep in mind that I never do take out there, as all their sandwiches tend to be pretty messy, and turn into a soggy, but delicious, mess during the five minutes it takes to get back to my office. A few obvious tourists, gaping at at the Guy Fieri pictures, is about the only change from the last time I was there. Lucky to have this place.
  2. Well, I did wait in line for hummus, and it gets a solid "meh" from me. I went with the #5...chicken shawarma, pickled onions, herb tahini and za'tar. The chicken was terrible...nothing shawarma-ish about it, just chunks of low quality, barely seasoned chicken. As for the hummus itself...it was fine. Nothing in any way exceptional about it. I'd put the pita a little above average, but again, nothing to write home about. I imagine this place caters more to vegetarian tastes, so maybe that's the way to go here.
  3. Had a surprisingly good Restaurant Week lunch there as well a few weeks back. Started with the hush puppies, which were as good as I've eaten, had the pulled pork, which could have had a nicer bark, but was nicely smokey and juicy, and a solid piece of chocolate cake for dessert. I'd go back for a real meal.
  4. But if it's delicious, why is it distressing that they use asian crabs? Glancing at their website, I don't see Faidley's claiming to use Maryland crab either, fwiw.
  5. I think The Inn getting three stars is surprising. Don't get me wrong, I love the place, but for three stars I expect to get blown away by every course, and that's never happened to me there. But who knows...I've never been to a three star. Maybe none of them are really THAT transcendent.
  6. Being a journalist has nothing to do with training, but it certainly does have something to do with fact-checking. In the interests of journalism, why not call the owner/manager and ask where the crab came from?
  7. I miss that place. It was the first and only restaurant I've ever really been a regular at, back in my single/Capitol Hill days. I loved eating at the tiny bar looking back into the kitchen. Used to eat the mussels all the time, occasionally getting the great rabbit or hangar steak if I had some extra money. Gotta go back there at some point.
  8. Same experiences here. Started out strong, but when I went there a few weeks ago the mini-burgers were incredibly dry despite being cooked pink, and the pizzas were all tasteless.
  9. Anyone know what's going on with Ray's? Had dinner there a few days ago, and the place feels like they have given up. The nicer of the two dining rooms is closed off and looks like it's being used for storage, boxes are piled up on the host station, and the website is now bare bones, and reads, "please enjoy the internet without us." It felt like the place was about to shut down. Which is a shame, because we had a typical excellent meal...the filet, strip and bavette were all wonderful, the crab bisque delicious and filled with lump crab, and the bill was still drastically lower than we'd see at any fancy steakhouse. I sincerely hope this isn't the end for Ray's the Steaks.
  10. Funny you should ask... "At Spoken English, Step Right up and Mingle" by Tom Sietsema on washingtonpost.com
  11. Chef Tien had a good run on Iron Chef Gauntlet...fun to watch him. Should make it even harder to get in.
  12. Another vote for Ray's...the only really exceptional burger I've had in quite some time.
  13. I found the article odd. "To select Wawa for lunch in the District, you must stubbornly overlook far superior destinations, including Bub and Pop’s, Sundevich, Taylor Gourmet, Smoked and Stacked, Beef ’N Bread, Duke’s Grocery and more" That's like saying it's silly to go to Domino's when there's Two Amy's and Pizza Paradiso around. Sure, but that's apples and oranges. Not to mention, most of those places are far away. I don't think anyone has ever had a conversation where they were deciding between Wawa and Smoked and Stacked. To me, Wawa is much better than Subway, has a really big selection, and is quick and convenient. It's never going to replace Bub and Pop's for me, but that's not what it's there for. I'm very happy to have Wawa.
  14. I'm there at least once a month, but only on weekends. Best Indian buffet I've had in the area. I like that it leans towards the meat-centric, although they always have some good veggie dishes as well.
  15. I guess we're just masses of ignorant fools that don't understand Indian food. Or just people who like different food than you.
  16. I understand your reasoning, but it still feels like piling on a small family owned space. Tapa Bar goes out of business, and you immediately pan their new restaurant. Maybe it's partly the knowledge that their downtown Bold Bite just closed as well that makes this seem needlessly cruel.
  17. I asked the same question in the comment section of the preview...his answer: "The previous restaurant in that space, TapaBar, from the same ownership, was a solid, two-star restaurant. I was a fan. Readers might be curious how the follow-up is. I know I was." I agree with the rest of you...no reason to publish that preview.
  18. Hadn't been here in ages, and was in the mood for deli. Went by, and almost didn't go inside. The signage outside said Heckman's Beer and Wine (or something like that), and the front window was plastered with beer sale signs...couldn't even see inside. I has assumed they had stopped making food, and went into the alcohol business instead, but I decided to peak inside to make sure. Seems they do both now. Still have some restaurant seating in the front and at the little bar, but now they have a small beer and wine store in the back. Honestly, the place kinda looks like a mess, like they can't decide what they want it to be at this point. Again, I almost left, but decided to sit down and order lunch anyway. And had the best hot pastrami sandwich I've had in the area. Period. Perfect balance of lean and fat, lots of meat, great flavor, perfectly sliced, nice bread and mustard...everything exactly right. I don't go here often, I don't know if it's always this good or if I just got lucky, but wow...I was really happy. Incidentally, they also have home delivery of beer and wine. Good to know.
  19. You're thinking of the pop up that came after/during TapaBar. It has now re-opened as R Family Kitchen and Bar, and supposedly has Pho, although I can't confirm that. "R Family Kitchen & Bar Opens in Former TapaBar Space" by Joe Zimmermann on bethesdamagazine.com --- Edit: Looks like they only have chicken or veggie pho, which is disappointing.
